We just added two brand-new items to Ecoswag.com this week that I'm really excited to tell you about:

Med Energy Guide

7×10 Energy Guide Notebook

Energy Conservation is becoming ever more important, and education is the key to greater conservation. Even small changes in habits, like turning down thermostats at night, can have a huge impact when multiplied by thousands (or millions) of people!

Our Energy Guide Notebook is newly designed for 2011, with a handsome 100% post-consumer recycled paperboard cover and a pre-printed 16-page section that includes great energy conservation tips, statistics and information everyone can use. The pre-printed section is followed by 50 blank, ruled sheets of post-consumer recycled filler paper, making it a perfect notebook for distribution at energy-related conferences and symposiums.

We're featuring the Medium 7"x10" size on our website, but we do also offer the larger 8"x10" version as well as a smaller 5"x7" size that includes 100 ruled pages. All come…

One of the reasons I blog is to keep our clients on top of the newest trends in promotional products. One of the biggest so far this year is dual-wall glass drinkware, like these 10oz Glass Tumblers we recently added to our Ecoswag.com collection:

Dual Wall Glass Tumbler
Ecoswag item GSI-GLS-20

Last year's hot sellers were the "I'm not a paper cup" inspired mugs, and this dual-wall glass version extends that trend in a stylish way. I love how the clear, double walled design makes the beverage appear to "float" in the glass. An added bonus - now you can answer the age-old question of whether the cup is half empty… or half full!

One big advantage these mugs have is being both dishwasher and microwave friendly, which isn't the case with the stainless steel types. They fit nicely in cupholders, and the insulated design keeps beverages hot or cold longer. They also remain cool to the touch when filled with hot liquid, so they not only replace disposable coffee cups, but java jackets too.

The other new…

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about online internet printing…something that, in a sense, we offer, too, with our website and our online ordering and our online estimating. But I was thinking about why anyone would pick an online printer when they could pick us instead.

Is www.mybigfatonlineprinter.com going to pick up the phone at 7 p.m. when you are having a crisis? Are they going to work on Super Bowl Sunday because you have a big presentation on Monday? No. But here is the other thing. They don’t buy stuff from you. They don’t send kids to your schools. They don’t talk to you at the grocery store.

So what’s a local printer to do? For that matter, what’s the owner of any small, local company supposed to do when faced with larger or out-of-market competitors online?

For me, I decided to fight back… and I came up with a BRILLIANT plan. Ready? I’m going to offer you incredible service, incredible quality, and be incredibly responsive to you. Best of all, I’m going to do ALL of…

It’s crazy out there. The market is bouncing like a basketball. Consumers are keeping their wallets in their pockets. The tried and true doesn’t seem so true anymore. So it’s more important than ever to keep your customers comfortable. They have to know you aren’t vanishing today, or tomorrow. You have to make your customers feel secure. If you lack credibility, your customers will lack that comfort! Here are a few easy, and few not-so-easy, things you can do to make your customers comfortable.

1. Put a phone number and address on every single page of your website. People are a lot more comfortable if they know it’s easy to get to you. So check your website. Is that number there, prominently on every page?

2. Update! Update your website, your marketing materials, your emails, your message. If you’ve got your Christmas message up in June, that doesn’t look very credible to your customers.

3. TELL people you’ve updated. Not only is this an opportunity to get in front of your customer…

Google may be the world’s most popular search engine, but it’s also a digital Swiss army knife. In addition to traditional searching, here are 10 lesser-known uses for Google search:

World clock. Find the time in any city by typing “time ” and the city name, city and state, zip code, or city and country (e.g., “time New York City”). Google will tell you the current time in that city.

Dictionary. Type “define: ” and the term you wish to define (e.g., “define: monarchy”). Google will give you a list of definitions from a variety of online sources.

Currency converter. Enter the amount you’d like to convert and the two currency types to convert to/from. For example, “345 USD to CAD” will show you the Canadian dollar equivalency to 345 US dollars.

Calculator. Enter a mathematical problem to calculate (e.g. “3*2+(9sqared)”), and Google will give you the answer (e.g. “87″).

Weather. Find the current weather conditions and forecast for many major cities worldwide by simply typing “weather…

Enjoy Twitter but not willing to pay for it? You’re not alone. In fact, researchers at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism found that, while 49 percent of Internet users surveyed had used Twitter or a similar free micro-blogging service before, zero percent would be willing to pay to use Twitter in the future. That’s right: Zero. Zilch. Nada.

“Such an extreme finding that produced a zero response underscores the difficulty of getting Internet users to pay for anything that they already receive for free,” said Jeffrey I. Cole, director of the Center for the Digital Future at the Annenberg School.

The 2010 Digital Future Study is the 10th such study performed by faculty and students at the Annenberg School. “Beginning with our first Digital Future Study in 2000, and in every year since, we have found extraordinary levels of shifting views,” Cole explains, as well as “evolving attitudes about technology.”

Over that time, the number…

Here’s an interesting set of statistics from my industry (printing) that illustrate an important truth in marketing. The demographic of most printers in the United States is white male, over 45. By contrast, the demographic of most print-buyers is female, under 40.

As with all statistics, these demographics may not be true in all cases or for any one individual person, but they illustrate an important fact: You are not (always) your customer. So stop for a second and look at two things:

1. Who buys from you? Take a look at your customer base. Do they trend toward a specific demographic? Young, urban males, with disposable income? Older, suburban males or females, with school-aged children? Seniors? Find out what kinds of consumers use your products or services, and who you should be targeting.

2. Who is your current marketing targeted to? Now, take a look at your marketing materials. Who are they geared toward? Are you targeting the right demographic for the products and services…

That got your attention, didn’t it? And it illustrates a simple marketing truth: Be compelling.  You could have the most amazing stuff to sell, but if you don’t make it compelling to read, then you aren’t going to get far.

Now, before you start wondering, “But what about the zombies?” don’t worry. Here’s the list I promised at the beginning of this column, along with some nuggets you might not have known about our printing firm:

7. A printed map will let you know where the zombie hangouts are, so they can be avoided. Invaluable for tourists in Washington, DC, so they can avoid the walking dead at the Capitol and White House! Did you know we can print maps?

6. Bright-colored packaging, with realistic imagery, advertising TV dinners for zombies will placate today’s lazy, new age zombies, who are more interested in convenience than substance, when it comes to preparing their meals. Did you know we can print all types of packaging?

5. Printed direct mail pieces can alert citizens to a…

How valuable is your attention? How much is your ability to focus worth? Your success is dependent upon your ability to focus your attention on whatever it is that is going to make you grow. Here are some tips on how to improve your focus and attention

Pay attention to your working memory. “Working memory is the ability to actively hold the information in the mind needed to do complex tasks such as reasoning, comprehension and learning. Working memory tasks are those that require the goal orientated active monitoring or manipulation of information or behaviors in the face of interfering processes and distractions.” In other words working memory is the amount of space you have to pay attention. Here is a neat list of tricks to help improve your working memory… http://su.pr/1E2bQi…cool note…playing video games counts!
