Yes – and no. Read on.

Formaldehyde is a common chemical and a by-product of combustion (tobacco smoke, vehicle exhaust, and fumes from fireplaces, furnaces, and wood stoves). It can also be found in water solutions such as preservatives or disinfectants, and is used in the manufacture of many building materials. Formaldehyde gas has no color, but in high quantities has a sharp smell and can be toxic.

There are two main types of formaldehyde: urea and phenol. The majority of health problems come from urea formaldehyde. In the 1950’s urea-formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) was developed. UFFI was usually mixed on site during a home’s construction and then injected into the walls where it could “cure” and become an insulator. Because excessive amounts of urea formaldehyde gas escaped from the walls and made people sick, UFFI has not been used since the 1980’s and is banned in many places. However, today urea formaldehyde is also present in water-resistant adhesives and is…

Houston and the surrounding counties are trying to find some semblence of normalcy but it’s not coming very quickly. For Galveston, it may never come.

Picture 138

Weeds are unwelcomed guests in your garden beds, cracks in the sidewalk, and throughout your lawn. We curse them, try and kill them, and they bring out the beast in us as we yank them root and all from the Earth. Personally, I never have so much satisfaction as when I am pulling those suckers right out the ground. It is down right peacefull except when I end up pulling flowers that I thought were weeds.

When I plant my garden, I always swear that I will mark where I plant. The best laid plans of mice and men (in my case, women), right? Well, my markers fall down and I am not sure what I planted. So my weed friends grow and I am not sure if they are flowers or foes. Sometimes, I wait until they are large and call for reinforcements by sending my weed pictures to my county master gardener extension. I am always hoping that they will tell me that some bird dropped a master piece in my garden.

One day, I sent my pictures over to the master gardeners. I was all excited about one weed…

birthday cake by chidorian

September 17th is my official birthday, although I celebrate it with my friends before my birthday and after my birthday.  Some make birthday resolutions.  Others hide from the day because it is one more candle on the cake. Who wants to age past 29?

This year is my 49th birthday. Age never bothered me since I never paid any attention to it. If I slowed down, it was because I have not taken care of myself like I should.  I have cut back on my exercising, starting eating wheat again, and diet coke has crept back into my life.

Next year is the big one.  50.  For those of you who are younger than me, I think turning 50 will be so much scarier than turning 30 was.  Next year, I will have a child in college with another one on the way.  Where did life go?  So, if I can give advice to those younger than me, it would be to slow down and enjoy the moment.

When you have four children, work, and take care of a home, days and weeks just fly.  Over the years, I try to rein in the…
