I am starting a little game of High/Low which will bring both the “high-end” expensive items with more reasonably priced counterparts for the rest of us. I’m going to start this game off with something a little old school- turntable record players.
Eco Chic High
The “High” comes to us from German-based company Montegiro, and is quite [...]

We’ve returned from the Green Builders Show held in conjunction with the VT Log & Timber Frame Show at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction, Vermont. We are pleased to see so many people beginning their building projects as evidenced by the increased attendance over last year’s show and the number of people we spoke with about their home plans at our booth.

Jeremy presented a “Green Home Design” seminar on Saturday and Sunday, and the seminar had exceptional attendance on both days. Fox News Channel 44 was at the show and interviewed Jeremy in their segment, “Building a Green Home”.

At the show we scheduled several site visits with clients who wish to begin their home design. At the site visit we will position the home for views, solar gain, and driveway access and discuss any potential challenges to the property with our client.

Bonin Architects provides architectural design and project management services for conventional green homes as well as timber frame… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

energy star

Every year, we make New Year’s  Resolutions to lose weight, get more sleep, and eat healthier.  However, we never seem to make those resolutions about the structural components of our house.  Do you ever hear, “I vow to weather-strip my house, give my HVAC a yearly checkup, or check for leaks in my house?”  Ur, no.

Don’t get me wrong, New Year’s Resolutions to make you healthier are wonderful, but how about giving some love to the structure who shelters you from the cold and heat?  I have covered how to lower your energy consumption via your attic last year.  Try to cure your energy blues, and even try to help you close up your leaky house without telling the neighbors.  Yes, I have been that loyal friend trying to save you some green to be green.

I know energy conservation is just not as sexy as discussing red hot green tips for Valentines or discussing the pleasure of amazing, down to your toes, organic chocolate.  However,  it is one of those “do I have to?” concepts…

flexible duct

This month’s topic on the Green Mom’s carnival is global warming being hosted over at Not Quite Crunchy Chicken.  How many of you are freezing as much as I am? How many of you are tempted to crank that thermostat up until your toes are all warm and snuggly?

Stop right there.  If you don’t show some love to your heating and cooling ducts, then your toes might be snuggly, but your wallet will be empty. According to Energy Star, a typical house loses 20% of the air movement through its duct system due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts.  So our systems run longer to meet the demand of our heating and cooling systems and our energy bills sore.  Worse yet, the increase energy use causes more fossil fuel consumption at power plants which contributes to smog, acid rain, and global warming.

What I realized this fall as a volunteer in the energy exhibit area at Twin Maples, a renovated green historic Show House that most people had no ideas…
