New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania, “The World’s Most Popular Hotel”, has just announced that it has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) prestigious ENERGY STAR. Only two hotels in Manhattan have qualified for this award, and the Hotel Pennsylvania is by far the largest hotel to have done so.

The ENERGY STAR is the national symbol for energy efficiency in America. More than 50 different kinds of products as well as thousands of new homes and commercial and industrial facilities have earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. Commercial buildings and industrial plants that rate in the top 25 percent of facilities in the nation for energy efficiency may qualify for the ENERGY STAR.

“We are pleased to accept the EPA’s ENERGY STAR in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said Steve Leonard, Director of Sales & Marketing at the Hotel. “Not only does our Hotel offer excellent location and value, but now we can add energy efficiency as well.”

Obama places the environment high on his agenda. On his historic victory speech on 5 November, he cited “a planet in peril” as one of the three key challenges he will face as President, alongside “two wars” and “the worst financial crisis in a century”.

One of Barack Obama’s key election promises was an energy policy that will fight climate change, create jobs and reduce the US’s dependence on foreign oil and gas.

During his election campaign, Obama said he planned to cut greenhouse emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, implement a ten-year, $150 billion clean energy plan and create five million ‘green’ jobs.

“Obama’s green jobs strategy could deliver a ‘quadruple win’ - dealing simultaneously with the economic recession, energy security, job creation and emissions,” commented Achim Steiner, the Executive Director of the UN…

Green designers and material engineers have been hard at work; creating renewables, recycleables and waste reclaiming products. Green building materials are developing at a rapid pace, from fly-ash concrete to fabrics made from recycled goods. It can be hard to keep up with all of the new developments in green materials, but there are two [...]

Okay,  it is not our [Realtors®] fault the MLS is not very GREEN friendly.  Let’s face it, what makes a house green is what’s “underneath” it all.  It’s all about “what’s in it”.  And the MLS could care less about that factor!

There are no special designated areas to put:

-window values
-water/energy efficiency
-HERS/LEED/Energy Star Ratings
-insulation type
-building orientation
-indoor air quality or any other factors that are the lifeline of a green home.

What are we to expect?    Obama has only been President for 10 hours!  And, even the President can’t make changes that quickly!

In the meantime, green home searching just got easier with the help of a new website– www.NationalGREENList.com  Here, one can access green homes for sale all over the good ol’ US of A. Granted, the site hasn’t been up too long so listings are a bit scattered, but that will change with time.

I must say I am proud to see Florida has 5 pages of green homes compared to 1…
