Despite the evolving global recession, there is a real opportunity if world leaders succeed in aligning short term response to the economic meltdown, medium term response to the development agenda and long term response to the climate imperative.

The need for global stimulus should be linked with the transformational potential of a green economy. Every liter of household cooking oil that is flushed down the drain pollutes nearly one million liters of Costa Rican river waters. In an effort to keep these waters clean NatureAir, the world’s first carbon neutral airline, has started Costa Rica’s first alternative fueling station, through its own aviation fueling company - Aerotica.

Since June of 2008, Aerotica has been providing bio-diesel in addition to its sales of aviation and jet fuel. The bio-diesel is produced from a mixture of recycled vegetable and cooking oils, and can be run in any vehicle accustomed to diesel.

NatureAir is the first airline in Central America to run its entire ground operations equipment and fleet of diesel vehicles off of this biodegradable fuel. This alternative fuel is estimated to reduce nearly 49,256 gallons of CO2 emissions per year.

“This program is an important milestone in NatureAir’s dedication to protecting the environment and conserving our nature resources,” said NatureAir Founder and…

Hotel room bookings are ahead of pace for the 2009 Mardi Gras season, according to the Greater New Orleans Hotel and Lodging Association. Mavis Early, executive director of the organization, states, "It definitely looks like this will be the most successful Mardi Gras since 2004." The average estimated attendance for Mardi Gras prior to 2006 was around one million.

Part of the American experience since the early 1700’s, Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday", is February 24 this year. According to a study done by the University of New Orleans, the celebration generates an estimated $840 million annually. Figures from last year show that 750,000-850,000 people attended Mardi Gras. And none of the figures include the over one-million day-trippers or local spending.

Mary Beth Romig of the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau points out that Mardi Gras is not just about fun for New Orleans; it is an important business that generates revenue and keeps people employed, not…
