Special to Enviroblog by Don Carr, EWG Press Secretary

Oil and gas drillers in the American West are exempt from most environmental safeguards.

You could imagine that companies engaging in hydraulic fracturing, the process by which highly toxic chemical are injected into the ground to force out natural gas, would be regulated by the Clean Water Act, at least, since ground water sources are sometimes near drilling sites.

But in fact, oil and gas drilling are exempt from the landmark 1972 statute

You might think that if a person came into contact with extremely hazardous drilling chemicals, and the person’s life was at stake, emergency response personnel would know what to do.

That’s not the case either.

In Colorado, a nurse nearly died after she touched the chemical-soaked clothing of a sick drilling worker. The drilling company refused to tell her physician exactly what she had encountered.

The exact composition of hydraulic fracturing, or fracing,…

It’s been a slow Monday for responsible travel news. In fact, it seems around 90% of the buzz out there is still reverberating from “Earth Hour 2009″, the world’s 3rd annual middle finger to global warming. Is everyone still recuperating from a solid hour of eco-goodness?

The outpouring of support and participation from businesses and individuals for Earth Hour, particularly in the travel sector, was unprecedented. Major hotel chains and destinations across the globe put out their lights for sixty minutes of recognition of the global climate crisis we now face. Many held events aimed at the eco-crowd, chock full of recreational green goodies. Blogs across the web bombarded our Twittery-heads with call after call of “what to do, how to do it” and so on.

About 2,800 cities in 83 countries — including 250 in the United States — participated in Earth Hour 2009, according to Dan Forman, a spokesman for World Wildlife Fund. “It’s all about the symbolism,” he said. “We fully…

Carbonfund.org’s Tensas National Wildlife Refuge Reforestation Project in Louisiana has become the first reforestation carbon offset project in North America to achieve dual validation by the Rainforest Alliance to the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) as well as the Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards with Gold Distinction.

Over 600,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be sequestered from the atmosphere throughout the lifetime of the project, which encompasses approximately 1,870 acres in northeastern Louisiana, about 220 miles from New Orleans and 65 miles from Jackson, Miss. This region, known as the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, was once covered in dense forests, but now supports less than 20 percent of its original 22 million forested acres. Decades of land conversion to agriculture for corn, sugarcane and cotton left the remaining forested area highly fragmented.

The project helps restore the area’s native bottomland hardwood forests and wetland…

The InterContinental San Francisco just announced its plan to achieve LEED® (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification by early 2010. Working in conjunction with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the organization that sets the standards and categories for LEED® certification, the InterContinental San Francisco is applying for certification in the “existing build operations and maintenance” category (EBOM) and will be evaluated on every facet of the property from construction and design elements to the types of amenities used in hotel guestrooms.

The InterContinental San Francisco, the first of a new generation of hotels, opened in February 2008. The 550-room hotel is set in the heart of San Francisco, in the city’s bustling South of Market district and adjacent to the Moscone Convention Center. Pursuing LEED® certification was a goal of the InterContinental San Francisco prior to its opening and since its debut the hotel has committed itself to…

Fresh from Green Festival Seattle 2009 where I saw so much great stuff, i have decided to begin with some of the baby items I came across.
Drawn to the bright colors and simplicity of the designs, I could not help but love what I saw. The colors and patterns remind me of a roll of [...]

In2Green at the Green Expo

In2Green at last year’s Go Green Expo. Check out the discount below to attend the show.

Last year, I attended the Go Green Expo in NYC in April, 2008.  To say it was spectacular is undervaluing how amazing the expo was.  Three floors of green’ess in every imaginable product.  Clothes, gardening, books, building products, coffee, and food.   We could be here all night if I listed all the different products that were there. I am not kidding.

Did I have a blast at the Expo last year?  You betcha, and I can’t wait to see all the new vendors that will be there.  There were alot of vendors I missed to last year since I have a propensity of talking too much. (Anna, say that’s not so. True. Guilty as charged.)

What can I say? If you are vendor, where do you want to be to show off your wares.  Did I hear, “New York”  from the crowd?  Sorry LA, Philly, and all the other cities that hosted the Go Green Expo, there is only one Big Apple.  So, if you want to see a great expo,…

march 2009 072

When you think of March, do you think about March Madness or do you start dreaming about your garden? In my house, March madness is very alive and well with the final four approaching. (Basketball lingo that I learn from the five men in my household.)  For me the color orange represents pumpkins not a rubber ball called a basketball.  But for my children, the color orange means B-ball, Ty Lawson (North Carolina), Tyler Hansborough (North Carolina), and Hasheem Thabeet (U Conn), and A.J. Price (U Conn).  Are you impressed that I know this.  Well, don’t be. I had to ask.

As they root for their teams on their bracket sheets, No one. I repeat. No one is excited about my garden except Moi.  Well, okay, they are never excited about my seedlings.  Honestly, they dread my garden since it means work for them.  They even offered to stop eating the strawberries if I would not ask them for help anymore. Sheesh. What’s a gardener supposed to do?

As they watched  such teams as North…

Amazon has Organic Lollipops which are also allergen-free; gluten-free; GMO-free; egg-free; soy-free; nut-free; casein-free; dairy-free. What will become organic next?
Overheard… “Mom, Can I have a Lollipop?  They’re organic so they must be good for you!”

Summer is coming. Swimming pools are major resource sinks.  If you are gifted (or cursed) with one, a pool cover is an essential item.  It helps improve the safety of the pool by preventing small kids from falling in and it helps reduce electrical, heating, and chemical costs.
Some vendors claim upto 80% savings using a [...]
