EWG Foodnews Shopper's Guide

Special to Enviroblog by Amy Rosenthal, EWG’s Farm & Food Outreach Coordinator.

You’re concerned about where your food comes from and whether it’s as safe as you think it should be. You’re trying to avoid pesticide exposure and bacterial contamination. You want to support better farming practices. Buying organic just makes sense.

Last week I was invited to the unveiling of Staples’ USGBC LEED GOLD Certification plaque.  Mayor Manny Diaz, Staples General Manager Ulysses Perez and Developers Michael Katz and Bill Biondi were all in attendance for the unveiling.  It was a small turnout, but a giant leap in the sustainability efforts of Miami-Dade County.

The Staples on Biscayne Boulevard is not only the first LEED certified retail building in Miami, it is the first Staples to receive such an accomplishment.  Thanks to Staples for setting such an example to pave the road for all future retail establishments.

Exclusive Galapagos Cruises (www.exclusivegalapagoscruises.com) and EQ TOURING (www.eqtouring.com) are now working together to make the eco-conscious traveler’s vacation a successful experience when visiting the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador, cruising in luxury yachts and vessels and staying in deluxe, conventional or boutique hotels and colonial haciendas in Ecuador, while learning how to protect the region’s natural resources and habitat.

According to Jorge Villalobos, CEO of these travel companies operating Galapagos Tours, “The success of our operation is not only offering a high-end experience, it is also to help preserve the Galapagos Islands for future generations and that is what makes us different from our competitors.”

“Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands and its beautiful ecosystems need to be preserved. We start by educating our upcoming generations about this conservation and our valuable clients are a big part of this priceless contribution,” Mr. Villalobos said.

Wilderness Ventures, the oldest and most experienced adventure travel program for young people, offers domestic service trips that are designed to enable young people to obtain 40 to 80 hours of community service while simultaneously offering opportunities for fun, outdoor adventures, and personal growth.

Volunteer travel has become a growing trend in the industry, and Wilderness Ventures’ programs offer young people the opportunity to lend a hand domestically while enjoying their peers and the great outdoors.

The small groups of 10-15 students with 2 leaders develop into close-knit intimate teams, while engaging in rewarding and challenging service projects in some of North America’s most breathtaking areas. The service groups spend their summer camping in one or two base camp settings and engage each day in rewarding service projects. Between service projects these groups are rewarded with outdoor adventure activities such as whitewater rafting, sea kayaking or hiking trips in…

I don’t always enjoy sending thank you notes and cards for different occasions, but I recently found a small box of blank inside cards with beautiful clean design that just makes me want to write and connect with people. Its strange, I know, but I think there is something to finding that ‘just right’ card [...]
