Being a parent should not be a scary thing. It is supposed to be the time of joy, fun and reward. Ok, and a few boo-boos.

But trying to keep your child clean and healthy is serious business. Especially when you read the new report, released today, by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. EWG is the founding member of the campaign, along with groups such as Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, Breast Cancer Fund, Clean Water Fund, Commonweal, Friends of the Earth, Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, National Black Environmental Justice Network, National Environmental Trust and Women’s Voices for the Earth.

The study documents the widespread presence of formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, potent cancer-causing chemicals, in bath products for children. Neither one of those chemicals are listed on labels, since both are by-products formed when preservatives react to one another.

The Campaign tested 28 products and found that

  • Over 60 percent items contained both formaldehyde and…

The Seventh Generation FAQ’s do state that amount of sudsing is affected by termperature though.  You [...]

United Planet has just announced its launch of Thailand Volunteer Quest, a program to promote a deeper level of cultural exchange and understanding between volunteers and the Thai people, while also making a vital contribution to an underserved community.

United Planet’s Thailand volunteer program originally ran through 2006 and, with this new launch, now offers opportunities for volunteers to teach English as a second language in three schools based in Ranong, Thailand, on the Andaman Sea. To celebrate the launch, United Planet is offering a 10% discount on all Thailand Volunteer Quests booked by May 31, 2009.

Three placement options are available at local schools — one serving Burmese children, and the other two, Thai children. Formal teaching experience can be beneficial, but is not required for this Quest as assistance and materials are provided. Volunteers can assist with classroom activities in addition to teaching English.

On March 28, Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) will open California’s first regional Animal Community Center that will change the way you think about an animal shelter. The center is one of the first environmentally certified “Green” Animal Community Centers in the United States to offer cage-less animal care and couple an adoption program with a full spectrum of pet and community services under one roof.

“We wanted to make Humane Society Silicon Valley not only the best place to adopt a pet, but the best place to learn about, engage with, and celebrate animals,” says HSSV President Christine Benninger. “With our enlightened architecture and design, and home-like habitats for animals awaiting adoption, our center offers a healthy, friendly and comfortable environment for both people and pets that we believe will change the way people view animals, treat animals, and live with animals. Once people visit our new center, they’ll realize it’s so much more than an animal shelter….

I always get excited to see well designed green ideas come to fruition, and the solar powered trash compactor is one of them. You can actually see these on the streets of Boston, MA and Palm Springs, CA.
This isn’t just some solar powered gimmick, it actually has a function which furthers its eco impact. [...]

Contech green concrete Stormwater filtration vault

Last week, Contech Stormwater Solutions installed at Newport Beach, California’s Fashion Island the above stormwater filtration vault, which will block pollutants from flowing into the ocean.  Besides removing harmful chemicals from our waterways, this particular Newport Beach solution contains  2xGreen, a “green concrete,” comprised of  industry byproducts of  fly ash, slag, silica fume, and other materials to replace Portland cement.  The benefits of this green concrete is that it reduces permeability, is stronger, and cost effective.  In addition 2xGreen’s anticipated life span is over 100 years.

The Company supplied the following environmental facts about this installation:

Dimensions of the Vault: 24 feet x 11 feet x 7 feet
Tons of 2X Green concrete: 77
Immediate C02 reduction: (compared to ordinary concrete) 4 tons
Overall C02 reduction: (due to extended service life of the product) 14 tons
Vehicle equivalent: 3 cars

General facts on Cement:
• The manufacture of 1…

Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year.

Regardless of when you hold your celebration, remember that Earth Day is Every Day for everybody.

Earth Day, April 22, 1970 signified the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson.

On this day in 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate on behalf of a healthy, sustainable environment.  Thousands of colleges and universities held protests against the degradation of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, raw sewage, toxic dumps, heavily polluting factories and power plants, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

The first Earth Day led to the creation of the U.S….

We have all been told the 3R’s.

Reduce-decrease the garbage you generate.

Reuse-use an item again instead of throwing it away.

Recycle-take an item that would be usually be put in the trash and transform it into a new product.

Recyclable indicates that a product can be recycled. It does not mean that an item is made with recycled content. When you purchase a recycled product it is referred to as ”closing the loop” because it completes the recycling process.

The recycling process includes three steps:

Collect, Process, and Buy.

If we are only are collecting recyclables its not enough, we must buy recycled products in order to create markets. Most products are not 100% recycled content, so look for the highest percentage possible.

When you purchase recycled products it conserves natural resources, saves energy, reduces solid waste, reduces air and water pollutants, reduces greenhouse gases, and creates new jobs.

In order to keep our blue planet green we must start…
