Special to Enviroblog by Alex Formuzis, EWG Director of Communications

Amid all of the negative and downright depressing news about the global economic meltdown, Wall Street swindlers, pirates, middle east violence and the break-up of Bristol Palin and Keith Johnson - I didn’t see that comin’ - there was some very good news many in the environmental and public health communities have been waiting for.

“Companies will have to provide more detailed disclosure of toxic chemicals they release into the environment under a little-noticed provision in the massive spending bill President Obama signed into law yesterday,” Juliet Eilperin reported in the March 12, 2009 edition of the Washington Post.

The Global Spa Summit (GSS), an annual conference that gathers top spa industry executives from all over the world, will be held May 17-19, 2009 under the theme of “The Power of Collaboration.” The setting will be the award-winning Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa in Interlaken – a place reminiscent of the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Just as in years past, the 2009 Summit is likely to be a sold-out endeavor, with an expected 40 countries represented in this year’s delegation.

“With core spa industry revenues topping $60 billion, and another $194 billion in spa-related hospitality, tourism, and real estate, plus over 1.2 million workers worldwide, our industry is a key contributor not only to global economic health but, of course, to global consumer health and wellness more generally,” said Pete Ellis, Chairman of the Global Spa Summit Board of Directors. “The GSS is the only place where the top trend-setters in spa, wellness, and related…

The Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD) announced today its new name, Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), and a new web address, www.responsibletravel.org.

“This new name better describes our mission to `transform the way the world  travels.’ We are involved in projects covering all sectors of the tourism  industry, not just ecotourism,” explains Center co-founder and Co-Director, Dr. Martha Honey who heads the Washington, DC office. “And besides,” she adds, “our old name was hard to remember and a mouthful to say.”

The Center for Responsible Travel is an international nonprofit institute  affiliated with Stanford University and headquartered in Washington, DC. It conducts policy-oriented research, programs, and field projects designed to  minimize the negative impacts of tourism and maximize the positive contributions  to host destinations and conservation.

“Our name change also reflects growing reforms across all sectors of tourism. Over the past three…

Green Building14 Mar 2009 09:00 am

The current design is 2158 square feet (not including the garage) for this one story home. A practical air-lock gable foyer entrance will reduce the amount of cold winter air that is let in the home. Large overhangs and energy efficient windows will help the home stay cool in summer by reducing solar glare.

When we move from the home design development stage into the construction phase, the floor plans will be finalized and material specifications compiled for bids. In the meantime, final revisions are being made to the plan to meet the homeowners’ needs.

The home was originally to be built with conventional 2x building material, but after hearing the many benefits of structural insulated panels, the homeowners changed their minds to include SIPs for the walls and roof. Some of the features and benefits of SIPs are:

  • Reduced energy costs (50%-60% less per year when combined with other high performance building systems)
  • Healthy living environment
  • Reduced construction site waste
  • Design…
