The National Business Travel Association (NBTA) awarded its first Corporate Social Responsibility Awards (CSR) to Symantec and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) for innovative programs and initiatives that recognize the mission and objectives of the NBTA CSR Committee.

Representatives from each winning corporation accepted the awards from former NBTA President & CEO and current CSR Award Committee Chair Suzanne Fletcher at the first Green Travel Summit in Newport Beach, CA, which was co-sponsored by NBTA.

“Corporate Social Responsibility is an increasingly important component of corporate life,” says Kevin Maguire, NBTA President & CEO, CCTE, GLP. “The winning companies of the first NBTA CSR awards, which were selected from dozens of applicants through a rigorous review process, have proven to the industry that a well-managed CSR program and creative social initiatives can successfully reduce the global environmental impact of business travel.”

Eastern Carolina University’s Center for Sustainable Tourism is currently working on establishing a new and entirely unprecedented Master of Science Degree in Sustainable Tourism; the first of its kind in the United States. The program is structured to train a new generation of tourism professionals and academics who have both an understanding of the fundamentals of tourism as well as sustainability.

Plans are currently being reviewed by the University of North Carolina-General Administration office, while the target start-date of the program is set for the Fall 2009 semester.

“Once the program has been established, we will be able to immediately integrate students into programs that are going on in the state, including programs at hotels,” said Alex Naar, Sustainable Tourism Outreach Coordinator at East Carolina University.

We’ve noticed that most office buildings have only allow elevators access and at best allow you to use the stairs to walk down. Must be a security issue, but the world could save energy and burn fat by allowing/forcing users to take the stairs. Elevators use a lot of power.
