Possible regulations limiting the amount of CO2 emitted in our atmosphere are slowing and even halting the constuction of coal fired power plants around the U.S. Nearly half of the proposed coal fired power plants have been cancelled or placed on hold in the last three years due to these possible limitations on carbon dioxide emissions.

Coal is being hit the hardest because it releases more CO2 per unit of energy than any other energy source. Due to our ever increasing demand for energy, we will need to look to other forms of energy to replace coal. The decline in coal fired power plant construction is a step in the right direction to switching from nonrewable energy to renewable energy that is healthier for the environment and ourselves.

Sketches on tracing paper in the preliminary design phase come in handy to see alternate room layouts and spatial relationships. Clients love the artistry involved and the human element to their design.

The client was unsure about whether to have the wood stove centered on the gable endwall or in the corner. The sketches were quick and extremely helpful in showing various furniture layouts as well as window and door options.

Painting the wall with potato chips

Olestra, the laxative fat substitute, could represent a green replacement for hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in newer low voc paints. A recent Scientific American article made me curious how and if Olestra could represent green chemistry.

A previous Enviroblog post detailed the hazards of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), their common use in household products and their link to both short and long term adverse health effects.

Remember Olestra

Olestra, introduced to the diet-crazed public in the ’90s, aimed to be the magic molecule, replacing fat in products without adding calories. Olestra had one major problem, however, it proved to be too effective in passing through the body (literally). The Olestra side effects led to more FDA complaints than any other food additive to date.

Olestra can still be found in some low fat snack foods and a counter of Olestra…

It is good to see that even Coca Cola is getting green.  They are using 100% compostable cups in their beverage showroom.

The stores in the Grand Canyon are also using ‘Green’ bags. Did not really want this bag but figured we’d take a picture of one.  The clerks were shocked that we did not want [...]

Special to Enviroblog by Sonya Lunder, EWG Senior Analyst.

The topic of mercury and fish is once again in the news. This time it was prompted by public comments submitted to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) about its controversial (hurry-up-and-get-it-out-before-George-leaves) mercury report, which largely concludes that the toxic effects of mercury in fish are mostly overcome by the beneficial fats in fish. Here at EWG an eyebrow or two (OK, more than that) were raised when these “findings” were released.

The problem with FDA’s guidance? Bad science
FDA’s new guidance is based on a fatally flawed model leaked last fall that was blasted by mercury experts at the Environmental Protection Agency - who cautioned against releasing it, citing scientific flaws and inadequacies.

The current draft, released minutes before the Inauguration, has slightly less outrageous language, but the basic findings remain the same. Recent public comments submitted by EWG, scientists and…

It’s amazing how many things we use out there that just get thrown away. Good thing there are creative and resourceful individuals who are willing to try to make products out of recycling just about anything.
Recycled sails and recycled inner tube bags are the hot ones right now, but I just found another unique [...]

One of our current designs is for a timber frame carriage house on Lake Winnipesaukee. One of the owner’s goals is for the carriage house design to make good use of its space. The lower level houses is large enough to house three cars, a laundry room and additional bathroom for the residence above.

The upper level of the timber frame carriage house is a compact, yet efficient design. Two bedrooms are minimal in size yet the main living area has a grand open feel with views towards the lake. A sleeping loft is accessible by a ladder next to the kitchen, adding a fun spot for overnight youngsters as well as storage in the low eaves spaces. The ladder eliminates the need for another stairway and increases living space.

The dining, kitchen, and living areas are open to the timber frame cathedral ceiling, while ample windows take advantage of beautiful lake views. The architectural style of the carriage house will match the timber frame home, blending it with its environment and provide…

As you can see from the above picture, solar panels can get dirty. I try to clean my panels at least two times a year. March/April when the rainy season has passed, and August/September, towards the end of summer.
I have found a 10-15% decrease in solar output when my panels are dirty.
I hose off my [...]

As part of their Earth Month outreach efforts, EPA launched “Pick 5 for the Environment,” encouraging the public to commit to taking at least five actions to protect the environment. Pick 5 helps people identify ways they can protect their environment and makes use of social media sites to allow them to share their tips and stories.

Since April 1, EPA has issued daily green tips via podcasts and email subscription. EPA is asking the public to pick 5 of the 10 actions listed below and then to share their own thoughts by using a variety of social media sites.

After signing up on EPA’s Web site, people can share tips and stories on Facebook, photos on Flickr, and videos on YouTube. A Facebook application will make it easy for members of that site to sign up and encourage their friends to participate. People can also sign up for email updates from EPA.

The 10 actions are:
1. Use less water.
2. Commute without polluting.
3. Save electricity.
4. Reduce, reuse and …
