Last week I took my kids for a haircut. We go to a terrific woman in our neighborhood who runs a hair salon out of her house, and she’s cut my kids hair since their very first cut. She’s warm, patient and loves my kids. While my 6-year-old son was squirming in her chair, she offered to have her daughter paint my 3-year old’s toenails.

Since I’m hardly a fan of carcinogenic ingredients and am unsure which nail polishes contain them and which have removed them, I said no.

Saying “no” can be hard.
Saying no, of course, is far easier said than done. Oh, I can say no to my 3-year-old (do it all the time), but I also had to say no to this super nice woman who made a generous offer to please my daughter. Slightly trickier, right?

So I explained to my crying daughter that we can’t paint her toe nails because the polish might have toxic ingredients that “aren’t healthy for her body” (my kids hear this all too often). All said, of course, in front of our friendly…

Another great find at the Seattle Green Festival were these gorgeous handcrafted wooden toys. They are the kinds of toys your grandparents and great grandparents used to play with, each handcrafted and built to last. What was truly amazing is the craftsmanship of these toys. They are built sustainably by a small village of artisans [...]

Insulated Concrete contribute greatly to an energy efficient, airtight building envelope. Typical insulation values for the ICF forms range from R-17 to R-26, compared to the R-10 (average) required by building codes.

There are numerous benefits of ICF construction:

  • Insulated concrete forms maintain a constant temperature, reduce temperature fluctuations, and eliminate drafts
  • ICF homes use less energy for heating and cooling (30-50% cost savings when combined with other energy efficient materials)
  • ICF forms are stronger than conventional foundation system, with less maintenance and repairs, can withstand high winds
  • Insulated concrete walls remain straight, does not warp or creak
  • An ICF wall creates a sound barrier, reducing 66% of noise
  • No chemicals used in the manufacturing process of ICFs, with no off-gassing
  • ICFs use recycled materials in webs and blocks, which saves trees
  • EPS and concrete are mold resistant, and prevent dust, pollen, and pollutants
  • Insects cannot penetrate an ICF…

baby in bubbles

Johnson and Johnson (J&J) is sponsoring a contest for families to win $10,000 by submitting a home-made movie showing their children having fun with bubble bath in the tub.  The videos will be featured on Johnson’s Baby Channel and voted on by other parents, J & J judges, and Angie Harmon, a celebrity and mom.

Although the contest states you are not required to buy JOHNSON’S® New Baby Bubble Bath and Wash, don’t you think that families are going to run out and buy it hoping to increase their chances of winning?  Personally, this is marketing genius.  Who would not want to try and win the $10,000?  Who doesn’t have cute kids, bubble bath & a camcorder?  Good clean fun.   But is it?

In March, 2009, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics issued the “No More Toxic Tub”  report, which revealed how toxic your child’s personal care products could be.  Forty-eight products , including certain J& J products, were tested by an independent lab for for…
