USA Today’s March 31st story “EPA to monitor 62 schools’ air,” left me feeling angry and hopeful. Hopeful because the Obama administration is starting to make good on its promises to take public health and the environment very seriously.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced plan to monitor air and air pollution outside of the 62 schools nationwide. The move comes as a response to USA Today’s investigation that concluded that some schools appear to be loaded with toxic chemicals.

Using government data and computer simulations, USA Today discovered that over 400 schools had higher level of toxic air. Higher levels in fact, then an elementary school in Ohio closed because the levels of carcinogens found there exceeded the levels that state considers acceptable, by 50 times!

Schools are supposed to be safe, healthy environments where kids can learn and grow in. Growing is a crucial word here, since kids are especially prone to negative effects of chemicals while…

Mayor Manny Diaz is proud to announce Miami’s 1st annual Gateway to Green event being held April 7th-8th at Jungle Island.  Along with the City of Miami, Diaz has made a commitment to improving our city’s sustainability and green practices.

More than 50 exhibitors will be on hand to display their green products.  In addition, there will be speakers and panels that will address third-party green certification, selling green products and green financing.  The event is open to the public with a nominal fee.  This fee provides access to the exhibit hall, the speaking/educational sections, parking, and lunch!

As a result of the challenges posed by the global economic crisis and the upcoming G20 meeting in London, UNWTO has stressed that tourism and travel can play an integral role in any stimulus package and the shift towards a green economy. Importantly, it is a massive creator of jobs, as well as being the main services export for developing economies.

Due to its strong economic multiplier effect, tourism and travel, if properly encouraged can play a more important role in economic stimulus and building consumer confidence than is generally recognized. Travel fuels business growth, makes sport and entertainment possible, and sustains rural destinations. It also strengthens two-way trade by boosting income for the poorest countries, as well as for global suppliers who are mainly from G20 member states.

“Tourism and travel mean jobs, infrastructure, trade, and development. These are the issues that world leaders are emphasising in coordinated recovery actions. What we need is…

Sina Pearson's Earthy Greens Collection

With Spring arriving , Sina Pearson unveiled  her newest sustainable collection,  Earthly Green, comprised of Big Dots and Eco-Pile.  Pearson is known as a  creative designer ahead of the curve and committed to the environment.  I have previously written about the Company’s sustainable Bounce collection (along with other eco-fabrics)  since I love the bold colors and the stripes.  These two new fabrics seem to fit right in with the Company’s sustainable mission to create  lively, but long lasting and durable fabrics.

Big Dots Earthly Green Collection, sustainable fabric

Big Dots, a Crypton Green® fabric,  has a fun, contemporary feel to it with its all-over polka dot motif.  Imagine an updated retro-sixties look with two and a half inch spheres floating  above a multi-colored background. The dots are woven with a subtle metallic yarn to add a gleam to the fabric.   When I look at the fabric is reminds me of Saturn and Jupiter with its bands around the dots. The fabric is comprised of 63% post-consumer recycled…
