SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A majority of small business owners are taking at least small steps to make their operations more environmentally friendly, but one in three admit the slumping economy is impacting their plans to adopt more green business practices.

The results come from the Small Business Index survey from Wells Fargo and Gallup. A majority of those in the survey — 67 percent — don’t think customers will pay more for environmentally friendly goods and services.  This is up considerably since April 2007, when nearly half, or 49 percent, believed consumers would fork over more green for greener products.

Of course, the change in perception is due to today’s economic woes. Still, a spate of recent surveys show some are indeed willing. For example, a Forrester survey suggests up to 18 percent of consumers would pay more for an environmentally friendly product, while recent Carbon Trust research said it’s important to buy from…

Major stakeholders of the world aviation community today signed a Declaration calling for the rapid implementation of Performance-based Navigation (PBN), a new air navigation concept that will contribute to further improving the safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability of the global air transport system.

The new concept will enable the aviation industry to cut up to 500,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the President of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization, Mr. Roberto Kobeh González, emphasized that PBN “will help reduce airport and airspace congestion, conserve fuel and protect the environment, reduce the impact of aircraft noise near airports, and ensure reliable, all-weather operations. It will also provide operators with greater flexibility, while increasing safety and efficiency.”

“Our collective mission has always been to provide the citizens of the world with the safest and most efficient air transport…

So far, I have yet to graduate to the level of coolness required to own and operate an iPhone - still stuck in Verizon’s Blackberry blitz for at least another 8 months, at which time my contract expires and I am free to do as I so choose. However, if by chance I did have one of these shiny wonders in my possession, the new Discovery Guide application would be at the top of a long list of required tools.

GeoNova Publishing, Inc. just announced the Washington D.C. version of its new iPhone travel application, Discovery Guide Map; the first in a series of guides which also includes Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Manhattan, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

The applications are designed for intuitive reference by first-time visitors to major U.S. destinations, offering mobile access to interactive downtown maps. Each app features a handy “Locate Me” button that instantly marks the user’s exact location with a red pin on a city map. These maps also show the…

I just received some beautiful sustainably zulugrass bracelets from the Leakey Collection. These bracelets and almost all their jewelry are made by people of the Maasai tribe in the Rift Valley area of Kenya, East Africa from zulugrass. Seedlings growing home-made plastic terrarium
Seedlings Aboard!

The other day I watched a plastic bag float up into the sky like a balloon.   As it disappeared out of site, I was sadden by the prospect of the bag’s remaining life to  hang from a tree,  on a bush, or stuck in a ravine for years to come.  This darling of our modern world that reduces breakage and freight costs comes with an added price.  Plastic is littering our Earth and clogging up our landfill.  Creating plastic reduces a natural resource, petroleum oil. To make matters worse, some plastic leaches into our food, and it takes forever to biodegrade.  So, how do you balance our need to reduce plastic consumption with our fast pace lifestyle?

Just say No

I love salad bars; however,  the local supermarket only supplies #6 food grade plastic containers for its salad bar. I can’t recycle them and  cringe every time I use them. Inevitably, I take home the plastic and try to find a use for it. I  always vow to keep a clean one in my car.  Some how…
