As seen in a recent online issue of The New York Times, soon you will be able to monitor the energy efficiency of your home on your cell phone, wherever you are.
The soon-to-be-released tool, called TREE (Tendril Residential Energy Ecosystem), will allow homeowners to turn appliances, heating, and cooling systems on and off from work, the theatre, or the kids’ soccer practice. Similar to a video game, TREE will integrate with a collection of tools to track energy consumption and broadcast the results to local and distant displays. If your electricity consumption rises above certain levels, a display will start flashing a different color, allowing you to decide which systems you can shut off.
TREE will compare your home’s energy consumption with similar sized homes in your neighborhood, make suggestions on how to reduce your energy, and predict how much lowering the thermostat will lower your bill. How’s that for monitoring your carbon footprint?
TREE is expected to be released…

Special to Enviroblog by Amy Rosenthal, EWG’s Farm & Food Outreach Coordinator.
Fresh fruits and vegetables for the First Family, school kids playing in the dirt at the White House. A reminder to Americans that food actually comes from the Earth - who’s going to object to Michelle Obama planting a garden on the White House lawn?
Oh, that’s right - big, conventional agribusiness. They’re bent out of shape because the First Lady’s garden is *shudder* organic.
That “shudder” is a direct quote from an email written by a Mid America CropLife Association spokesman: “the thought of [the White House garden] being organic made [us] shudder.”

In it they make vague (and at some points disingenuous) claims about the importance of technology in farming, but entirely skirt the First Lady’s choice not to use…

My life is pretty simple and relatively boring. That was all about to change when I met a vintage chandelier that needed some TLC. It lead me down a road that most would not have taken. Ominous? Kind of. Friday the 13th? Not so scary. It involved stripping (and not the pole type), Franmar Chemical Soy Gel , an Earth friendly solution, and bring back a sleeping beauty back to life.
My green decorator, Nancy of NLM Designs, knows that I love antiques and used furniture. I like to purchase used furniture because it is a great value, significantly cheaper than new furniture, and it is green. No additional carbon footprint was created to buy something that already exists. (Check out my comfy used office chair article and vintage furniture one and hop upon the used furniture bandwagon.)
Back to Nancy. So she always keeps her eye out for me for a fabulous find. She found this beautiful chandelier at a local antique place which was just right for my second…
