The Climate Registry, a nonprofit organization that sets consistent standards to calculate, verify and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and Virgin America, the California-based award-winning airline, today announced the carrier has become the first U.S. airline to join The Climate Registry and commit to report its GHG emissions according to The Registry’s comprehensive, rigorous standards. Virgin America will report accurate and recognized emissions data as a Member of The Climate Registry on an annual basis as it measures and manages its emissions and carbon dioxide reduction goals.

A new 4-month program beginning in Spring 2010 combines instruction, research and volunteer community development in the Himalayas of Nepal.

Founded in 1999, Bridges-PRTD is a private company affiliated with Mountain Legacy that organizes study and volunteer programs focusing on recreation and development in the Himalayas of Nepal. Their Spring 2010 program in Nepal combines formal instruction, independent and team research, and volunteer community development. The four month program will run from February 12 to June 6, and will include 10 weeks on trek in the Himalayas.

Cortland Bridges to Nepal
Beginning with the 2010 spring program, Bridges-PRTD and Mountain Legacy are collaborating with the Sport Management Department of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland. Cortland Bridges to Nepal (CBN)! is an accredited program, offered as a culminating activity for M.S. students in the International Sport Management degree program.

For years, the American rail system has been decades behind that of most other developed nations throughout Europe and Asia. As a new travel and transportation initiative, the Obama administration is planning for a high-speed, efficient rail network to connect urban centers throughout the country. The White House has already identified 10 corridors, or sections, throughout the country in proximity to major urban areas, for major rail development, each ranging between 100 to 600 miles long.

“With clogged highways and overburdened airports, economic growth is suffering,” said President Obama. “What we need, then, is a smart transportation system equal to the needs of the 21st century, a system that reduces travel times and increases mobility, a system that reduces congestion and boosts productivity, a system that reduces destructive emissions and creates jobs.”
