The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) is challenging hoteliers across the country to track and improve their green business operations by taking the AH&LA Green Guidelines Challenge. Participants completing the challenge will be able to identify themselves as eco-friendly establishments based on benchmarking their operation procedures against AH&LA’s 11 minimum green guidelines , released in November 2008 by the association’s Green Task Force. The winner of the six-month challenge will also receive a green prize package from an allied AH&LA member.

The challenge begins today when AH&LA members receive a tracking tool to aid their measurement of occupancy statistics, monetary and energy expenditures, and return on investment (ROI) from specific green practices. To enter the challenge, participants must complete the online Green Guidelines Challenge survey by October 1, 2009. AH&LA members who successfully implement practices in line with any of the 11 guidelines are also…

A few months back, we posted an entry on how the “big boy” online travel giants like Expedia and Travelocity were getting in on the green game, stating that their efforts were “half-hearted attempts to reel in customers with the promise of something that is far from complete”. Personally, I have always been a fan of rezhub.com and wholetravel.com for green travel searching. Now, however, a new contender has stepped up, and it looks very, very good.

The GreenHotels Directory, a complete online reservation system designed for travelers seeking environmentally-friendly hotel accommodations, was launched by a partnership between Environment News Service and ARES Travel Network. Business and vacation travelers are able to instantly locate and make online reservations at hotels offering responsible conservation features.

Thousands of hotels have participated in the launch of the GreenHotels Directory initiative and more are being added every day. ARES has documented the environmental…

New York-based JetBlue Airways is encouraging customers, crewmembers and communities across its network to join the airline and pledge to do “One Thing That’s Green” to protect the environment. Just by making small changes to daily habits, everyone can help make the world a greener place. With a goal of inspiring 22,000 individuals to make pledges via www.jetblue.com/pledge, the initiative is part of JetBlue’s Jetting to Green environmental commitment.

“No matter what your stance is on today’s environmental issues, there’s no question that a cleaner, greener planet is good for all of us,” said Icema Gibbs, director corporate social responsibility for JetBlue Airways. “Just by making small changes in your daily habits, you can help make the world a greener place.”

JetBlue is taking action in a number of ways, the first being offsetting crewmember travel on company business for the second consecutive year with a contribution to partner Carbonfund.org. Customers may also choose to…

Purchasing wind power credits equal to 100 percent of overall energy consumption and maintaining a 50-percent, waste-diversion rate by recycling or reusing everything from food waste to horse manure are just a few of Grand Teton Lodge Company ’s (GTLC) environmental achievements outlined in the second edition of the company’s Envision™ Sustainability Report . GTLC celebrated Earth Day by releasing the report in an effort to encourage continuing dialogue within the tourism industry on best practices for reducing environmental impacts.

With a mission to preserve, protect and inspire, GTLC runs the equivalent of a small town in the remote Grand Teton National Park location providing the lodging, food and beverage, activities and retail services to the park’s estimated 2.6 million annual visitors. The nearest town is located 45 minutes from GTLC’s facilities, and major supply channels are on average two to six hours from its operation. With only 40 year-round staff, the GTLC team…

Green Crawler, a green online shopping website

Almost two years ago I interviewed Ryan Lewis, CEO of  Green Crawler, about the Company’s unique online green shopping website.  Recently, I received an email from him telling me about the Company’s relaunch of the website and their growth over the last two years.   So, what is Green Crawler?

“Green Crawler is an innovative online shopping database of green, organic, natural, eco-friendly, environmental friendly, energy efficient products, providing savvy online shoppers with an in depth catalog of green alternatives. Shoppers can browse a wide variety of products that contribute to the reduction of their carbon footprint, including household cleaners, personal care items, appliances, cosmetics and beauty items, household items, apparel, lawn and landscaping items, furniture, etc.”

At the time when I first wrote about the Company, they had only about 1500 plus  personal care products listed on the site.  In addition, green product vendors had to upload their…
