As part of their Earth Month outreach efforts, EPA launched “Pick 5 for the Environment,” encouraging the public to commit to taking at least five actions to protect the environment. Pick 5 helps people identify ways they can protect their environment and makes use of social media sites to allow them to share their tips and stories.

Since April 1, EPA has issued daily green tips via podcasts and email subscription. EPA is asking the public to pick 5 of the 10 actions listed below and then to share their own thoughts by using a variety of social media sites.

After signing up on EPA’s Web site, people can share tips and stories on Facebook, photos on Flickr, and videos on YouTube. A Facebook application will make it easy for members of that site to sign up and encourage their friends to participate. People can also sign up for email updates from EPA.

The 10 actions are:
1. Use less water.
2. Commute without polluting.
3. Save electricity.
4. Reduce, reuse and …

The most northern of the eight major islands and the oldest geologically, Kauai is Hawaii without the high-rises. It also has some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, even though it’s only 25 miles long and 33 miles wide. Since Kauai is more than 100 miles from Honolulu, the overdevelopment that has encroached on much of the state hasn’t made much of a dent on it. And because its rainforests are rimmed by almost impenetrable mountains, the island’s interior has defied “civilization.”

Kauai is called the “Garden Island” precisely because 97 percent of its land is composed of undeveloped mountain ranges and rainforests. It also has 43 miles of beaches, the most per coastal mile of any of the island chain. Local codes prohibit buildings over four stories, and the 58,000 permanent residents, most of whom live in small communities along the coast, prefer to keep it that way.

On Kauai, you’re sure to find the strand of pristine sand and palm trees that fits your daydreams of a…

Penn State will host a free public event to raise awareness and inspire action on some of the greatest challenges facing the world today. The program, called Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream, will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2009, from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the lower level of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park at University Park.

Awakening the Dreamer is an initiative that encourages people to get together to "bring forth an environmentally sustainable, socially just and spiritually fulfilling human presence on this planet," according to organizers. To date, millions of people across the globe have participated in Awakening the Dreamer symposiums.

"If we work together, we will come up with exactly what we need to do to create a sustainable future for all life. Together we are a genius," said Lynn Twist, co-founder of the Pachamama Alliance — the organization behind the symposium.

Through expertly-crafted video segments featuring progressive visionaries like green jobs pioneer…

When I heard the name, “One Block off the Grid,” I thought what a weird name. Is this like some trendy place like SOHO, which stands for south of Houston Street in NYC, or a some new band name which plays less than mainstream music?

So, what is One Block Off the Grid?  Basically in a nutshell, 1BOG, as it is affectionately known as, organizes large groups of people who want solar power to obtain group discounts.  There are active group programs  is San Diego, Los Angles, San Francisco, and New Orleans.  Launching soon is Denver, Washington DC, Sacramento, and Phoenix.  Check out how your city is doing here.  If it is not listed, you can go to the map and see how many people have signed up in your area.  I was surprised how many people have signed up in New Jersey.

How does this group purchasing idea work?  Watch the 30 second video and it will all become clear, grasshopper.

Now, you understand the concept, savings in numbers. But, what is up with the name? It sound like…
