The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is changing the way we think about buildings, specifically with regard to energy usage. Buildings currently account for nearly half of all greenhouse gas emissions, a fact we simply cannot ignore. AIA architects are leading the way by integrating sustainable design practices in all of their projects, thereby being able to reduce energy consumption to less than half.

This is a strong stand, but a necessary step toward achieving a 50% reduction from the current consumption level of fossil fuels used to build and operate new and renovated buildings by the year 2010. To meet this goal, the AIA started the “Walk the Walk” movement by saying, “We strongly believe that the time for talk has passed, and now it is the time to walk the walk.

AIA architects are uniquely poised to provide the leadership and guidance needed to provide solutions to reduce our national and global carbon footprint. By using sustainable design practices and techniques, such…

Civil War battlefields, ghost towns and antebellum mansions are some of the sites cycling enthusiasts will see on Mississippi: The Natchez Trace the latest U.S. biking trip from the award-winning international bicycle tour operator VBT Bicycling Vacations. The seven-day cycling adventure following the historic Natchez Trace brings participants into contact with Southern history, culture and cuisine.

The award-winning international bicycle tour operator will debut the comprehensive 7-day itinerary this Fall.

”As I created this itinerary,” said Chris Skilling, VBT’s Director of Worldwide Product, “my appreciation deepened for the people who keep our shared history alive - the historians at the Vicksburg Battlefield, the docents at Natchez’s beautiful mansions. That’s the beauty of this trip: we come across evidence of our history literally around every corner; we’re really immersed in it. We also get to know the gracious and welcoming Mississippians of today. And of course, real…

The Prince of Wales is harnessing the  power of digital media to launch the public awareness campaign of his “Prince’s Rainforests Project”; the purpose of which to create a climate of awareness and public concern that encourages action to end tropical deforestation. By signing up on the website, www.rainforestSOS.org, people can show their support for urgent action.

The focal point of the campaign is a 90-second public awareness film in which His Royal Highness appears alongside his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, an array of well-known figures including Harrison Ford, the Dalai Lama, Daniel Craig, Robin Williams and children from around the world.

Each individual appears alongside an animated frog. The frog, created by Framestore, the Oscar-winning computer generated imagery (CGI) experts behind the film The Golden Compass, serves as a symbol of the rainforest.

The film will be broadcast for the first time today, at 6pm BST, on a variety of websites, including the social…

A few months back, we posted a piece highlighting some of the nuances of the lean and green Hutton Hotel in Nashville. This May 14-16, The Climate Project (TCP), an international non-profit organization founded by Nobel Laureate and former Vice President Al Gore, will host its North American Summit at the eco-friendly hotel to mark the beginning of the organization’s “Phase Two,” signalling the transition from its original mission of increasing public awareness of the climate crisis to its expanded objective of “advocacy and activism.”

The Climate Project now seeks to educate people on how to get involved and take action to persuade elected officials and community leaders to urgently confront climate change concerns.

“The Hutton Hotel’s commitment to sustainability and conservation made it the natural choice for us in terms of locations for our North American Summit. We are excited to be hosting our event at the Hutton, Nashville’s newest hotel in Al Gore’s hometown, and to be…

Sustainable Travel International (STI), a global non-profit providing market-tested sustainability solutions for the tourism industry, is launching "STEP 2.0" — its new version of the Sustainable Tourism Eco-certification Program™.

STEP 2.0 is the world’s first comprehensive, global sustainable tourism eco-certification program offered by a non-profit organization. The program is now both affordable and aligned with the minimum baseline Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC).

“Now STEP 2.0 is applicable to tourism businesses of all sizes, including newcomers to sustainability, those wanting to improve their existing approach, and even businesses that have long-standing green programs,” says Brian T. Mullis, president of Sustainable Travel International. “Our new certification program, which has taken seven years to develop, is differentiated from other programs because it is user-friendly, educational in nature, and is practical as a measurement and management tool….

This seems to be the month of Eco-Jewelry here on The Chic Ecologist, probably because there is so much great stuff out there.
I recently received a note from Jessica over at Verre New York, a glass jewelry design team that attaches liquid glass to metal pieces for a beautiful effect.
Their abstract collections evoke all things [...]

New lettuce plant as part of my Organic Gardening adventure

You know the saying, “do as I say, not as I do?”   Here is the skinny of what I learned this year so you don’t repeat my gardening mistakes.  I find gardening can be like  an Indiana Jones movie.  There is peril, unsolved mysteries, and triumph all in one season.

Many of my loyal Green Talk readers (you know who you are) have weather slugsrabbits, and plants on steroids with me as I have gardened over the last couple of years.  Each year I try something new in the garden or do something different. In turn, Mother Nature keeps me on my toes, and changes the course of my plans whether the cabbage worms try to devour my broccoli, my Swiss Chard went to seed, or my beans withered from the heat.

Am I passionate about gardening? You betcha.  Gardening is a wonderful outlet for me.  I get to take my frustration out on unloved flowers (weeds), scream out those blasted crows who eat my tomatoes, and eat the most delicious strawberries and blueberries right in the garden. I…

mystery plant in the garden

One  of my biggest problems in my garden is I have no idea what are weeds and what are flowers.  I recall last year planting Sweet William in this particular bed but could swear that the seed package said it was an annual.

In April, this lovely plant appeared.  It does not look like Sweet William.  I have to say this is one of the prettiest weeds I have seen.  Can you see a little sign that is being held up by the plant, which says, “save this plant?”  (Look closer…)

Any ideas what this plant could be??
