New projections are in the works detailing the cost of the swine plu pandemic on travel and tourism, and the details don’t look pretty.

Concerns about the recent outbreak of swine flu and the worldwide coverage it is receiving have caused the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the forum for leaders of the travel and tourism industry, to revise its agenda for the 9th Global Travel & Tourism Summit, taking place next week in Florianópolis, the state capital of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

The opening session of the summit will now be dedicated to the subject of a possible impending pandemic, and WTTC will unveil a new economic model it has prepared, in collaboration with Oxford Economics, to forecast the economic impact of such a pandemic on travel and tourism.

A new report by npower shows that in today’s economic climate, 8 out of 10 businesses feel that government targets to reduce CO2 emissions are unrealistic, with many not seeing the benefit of a small carbon footprint and relegating carbon reduction measures to concentrate on managing costs.

According to npower’s Business Energy Index , the majority of UK businesses (83%) said the target to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 was unrealistic. Attitudes on the potential commercial opportunities of a small carbon footprint are equally downbeat; only 31% think new business will occur as a result of reducing emissions, compared to 47% in npower’s 2008 index.

The findings also reveal that the economic downturn is leading businesses to prioritise finances over CO2 reduction; 97% said they are currently more concerned with reducing costs than emissions.
