Donate your old denim jeans at two stores in Montgomery County and they’ll have them turned into natural cotton-fiber insulation.Last year the denim collected was recycled into 75,000 square feet of UltraTouch cotton insulation, which was then used to insulate more than 80 Habitat for Humanity homes on the recovering Gulf Coast. This year the Amicus Green Building Center in Kensington, Md., is

Solar is the hottest thing in green homes today – and with good reason.

According to The Clear Mountain Solar Store, our local solar experts, “all the potential energy of the earth’s known oil, coal and natural gas reserves is equaled by just three weeks of solar energy. It is estimated that the solar energy that reaches the earth on a typical day could supply all the power the earth needs for a year.”

New government incentives and the explosive growth of the solar industry is great news for people building a new home or preparing a green renovation of their existing home.

Photovoltaic systems can be grid-tied or off-grid, are completely safe, reliable, and require minimal maintenance. Better yet, they produce no carbon dioxide or air pollution.

Heating water for our households accounts for about 25% of our total energy costs. A solar hot water system in New Hampshire and Vermont can produce 70% of your hot water needs and can save an average of 60% - 70% in energy costs,… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

I have a 9 month-old son who is teething.  It is nearly impossible to
keep him from trying to chew on the TV, computer, remote, vacuum
cleaner or any other item in my house that I know has unnecessary
harmful chemical additives.  Now I’m supposed to worry about those same
chemicals in his toys?  Come on.

Study finds new pollutants in Chinese toys
A study by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences published 4.29.09 in Environmental Science and Technology reports widespread use of brominated fire retardant chemicals in Chinese-made children’s toys.

If you can’t keep toys out of your kid’s mouth (I thought they were made to be chewed on?!), then we need strong regulations to keep these toxins out of toys.  Unfortunately, we parents are still waiting for comprehensive legislation that ensures that kids’ products are safe for kids to play with.

Chemicals linked to fertility problems, hormone disruption and more…
Brominated…

(EcoGreenHotel) - If you’ve ever been to Florida – especially to ecologically-sensitive areas like the Everglades and the Florida Keys – you know that the state has incredible natural resources. Stunning beaches, unique and abundant wildlife, fertile land, and of course, all that gin clear water make Florida an extraordinary place to live and a fantastic place to visit.

And boy, do people ever visit! The state’s tourism marketing agency, VISIT FLORIDA, recently estimated that over 82 million people visited Florida in 2008. Since approximately 50% of Florida’s visitors stay in hotels, the lodging industry has a major impact on the state’s sensitive environment.

That’s why Florida’s Green Lodging Program (FGLP) is so important. Established in 2004 by the state Department of Environmental Protection, FGLP has assisted and recognized hundreds of facilities for their sustainability efforts. From huge properties owned by major chains like Hilton and Hyatt, to funky island…

The online travel mega-juggernaut has launched a campaign in support of the lifting of a U.S. travel ban to Cuba, based on findings of a series of traveler opinion polls. The OpenCuba.org campaign is designed to give Americans the opportunity to petition the U.S. Government to open up travel to Cuba.

According to a new Orbitz-Ipsos poll, 67% of Americans favor allowing Americans to travel to Cuba, while 72% think the ban-lift would positively impact the lives of the Cuban People.

“President Obama recently took a bold step in easing travel restrictions for Cuban-Americans,” said Barney Harford, president and CEO of Orbitz Worldwide. “The OpenCuba.org campaign calls on the President and Congress to take action to end the travel ban to Cuba, giving all Americans the freedom to visit what once was a premier tourist destination for U.S. citizens.”

“Our mission at Orbitz is to help travelers experience the world,” continued Harford. “67% of Americans would also support a policy that…

Climate change is a concern to most public health agencies, but few of them have resources to tackle the problem, according to a national survey conducted last year by Environmental Defense Fund, the National Association of County and City Health Officials, and George Mason University. Congress needs to provide $200 million to sponsor research for climate change and public health in federal agencies, according to a recent report in Environmental Health Perspectives, the peer-reviewed journal published by the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) praised legislation introduced late yesterday to improve the public health response to climate change. The bill is sponsored by the Vice Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health, U.S. Rep. Lois Capps (CA/Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura County), and cosponsored…

Xanterra Parks & Resorts - one of the best known travel operators throughout Yellowstone National Park - is planning to convert its gift shop in the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel into an interpretive facility dedicated to informing park visitors about climate change and offering environmentally friendly products.

“Although other stores may offer some of these products, we believe this is the first retail operation – in a national park or elsewhere – devoted to interpreting climate change,” said Beth Pratt, director of environmental affairs for Xanterra’s Yellowstone operations. “Our goal for this store is to connect the park visitor to the threats climate change and pollution pose to our national parks—and our world—with the need to make sustainable consumer choices.”

To be called “For Future Generations,” the store will open May 8 for the season and will be fully converted into an interpretive facility by mid-summer. The store will feature displays that will…
