Last week the Post had an article in the Home section about "green," environmentally friendly paints. Such paints have low or no VOCs (volatile organic compounds); when these evaporate, they cause the "new paint smell." Inhaling them can lead to respiratory and nervous-system problems. We use zero-VOC paint in our house because my wife has asthma and normal paint would aggravate her lungs. Plus,

2549234066_4578112d46.jpgWhile it may be true that for each and every day, week and month on the American calendar there is something to celebrate or advocate, this week we’re into it. Why?

Because it’s National Women’s Health Week. It’s also a few days after mother’s day, so rather than focus on kids - a concern to us and many women - we decided to shine some light on women’s health.

So we pulled together a little round-up to celebrate National Women’s Health Week. From body burden to safe cosmetics, and from mercury to breast cancer, we’ve blogged about it in 2009.

Whether you’re young or not-so-young, a mother or a grandmother or neither, there are environmental health issues that affect you, and we do our very best to see that they’re addressed by policy makers. Here is a sampling:

Pollution in people: It’s an inside job.

People across the globe are counting down to June 5: World Environment Day by participating in UNEP’s ambitious tree planting target that will not only encourage world leaders to seal a climate change deal in Copenhagen, but will also support the Billion Tree Campaign.

UNEP is appealing to everyone around the world to get planting! Whether you choose to plant one tree or thousands, the organization is asking for people across the world to register their “tree planting pledge” on the Billion Tree Campaign website, or by spreading the word to others on the World Environment Day website.

Some 3.1 billion trees have now been planted in 166 countries, and the aim now is to plant seven billion by the end of 2009.

Social media in action

Social networkers around the world can use their “Twitter” accounts to follow the campaign at www.twitter.com/UNEPandYou. UNEP is pledging to plant a tree for every twitter follower who joins in between now and 5 June. The goal is to engage 100,000…

As evident at last month’s Go Green Expo, “green” products and services are becoming more and more popular, with people embracing the idea across the country that “green” is good. So what could be better than furthering the movement? Educating consumers about the economic and environmental benefits of protecting trees, environmental responsibility and sustainability and “green” products, The Clean Air Green Tour Foundation has been helping the United States environment in education, awareness, and projects.

Winner of the 2009 GREENS Excellence Award, the 2009 National Clean Air Green Tour is a mobile marketing initiative that will visit more than 60 cities across the United States to educate consumers on the latest advances in sustainability.
