BPA legislation in California: The time has come
Author: Lisa Frack
Website: http://www.enviroblog.org/2009/05/bpa-legislation-in-califor…
As you likely know, the Minnesota legislature recently passed a statewide prohibition of bisphenol-A (commonly known as BPA) in baby bottles, sippy cups and other food containers for children 3 and under. Suffolk County, New York, has also banned BPA in such items, and the Chicago city council voted just last week to ban the sale of any baby bottle or sippy cup containing the chemical.
Next stop? California.
This is all great news and incredibly heartening for those of us who have long been working to pass similar policies elsewhere. Like California.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is working hard to pass the Toxics-Free Babies and Toddlers Act (SB 797) in California, which would virtually eliminate BPA from food and beverage containers for children under 3 years old.
What is BPA?
BPA is a chemical produced in large quantities for use primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Bisphenol A (BPA) was discovered to be a synthetic estrogen…

Ecogear launches line of eco-friendly bags
Author: TerraCurve
Website: http://www.terracurve.com/2009/05/19/ecogear-launches-line-o…
Quite possibly one of the coolest designed laptop bags I have tried so far, the Ecogear Genus line has got it all covered - from nifty zip-up pouches galore to quite possibly two of the most comfortable shoulder straps I have ever slung over my back.
I may not be scaling a mountain or hiking the hills of Peru anytime soon, but something tells me that this bag has what it takes to care for my most precious materials no matter where I am off to, be it my next dash to catch a flight or just commuting back and forth to the office. Whether I am carrying my laptop, wallet, spare clothes, iPod, cell phone, chargers or whatever else - you name it, I’m packing it.
And what makes them even better is that they are good for the planet.
Self labeled as a "toxic free" product, the Ecogear bags are truly a "smart" product. As Ecogear puts it, the bags are each "tough enough to handle any hike, run, or walk without being tough on the environment."
Saving the world one bag at a time
So, what’s so…

Carbon-neutral airline wins prestigious eco award
Author: TerraCurve
Website: http://www.terracurve.com/2009/05/19/carbon-neutral-airline-…
Air travel consistently gets hit with criticism for being one of the greatest catalysts for climate change. Greenhouse-gas-spewing jets continue to streak the blue skies; as of yet, "greener" alternatives to modern airplanes, from small prop-jets to jumbo airliners, have yet to hit the mainstream. Sure, some airlines like Virgin are stepping up to research fuel alternatives, while some studies suggest alternate flight patterns to cut fuel.
There are, as of today, no set rules regarding the "greening up" of air travel - most initiatives have been left up to the individual airlines as ways to operate more responsibly as well as lure customers toward greener pastures.
One such airline is NatureAir - a Costa Rican based airline that claims to be the world’s first carbon neutral of the kind.
Since starting business in 2000, the airline has become the fastest growing regional airline in Central America. In 2000, the company was flying 18,000 passengers per year, as compared to 2008…
