Thinking of incorporating a geothermal energy system into your green home?

Geothermal Heat Pumps, the most common use of geothermal energy systems in green homes, use stable ground or water temperatures near the earth’s surface to provide heating, air conditioning, and in most cases, hot water. Because they use the earth’s constant temperatures, they are among the most efficient and comfortable (not to mention sustainable) heating and cooling technologies currently available – and are becoming a popular alternative to oil, coal, and gas. With the ability to deliver comfortable heat even on the coldest days, cost effective equipment, and requiring only a small amount of electricity to operate, geothermal systems are a good consideration for a green home.

Three kinds of systems – Open Loop, Closed Loop, and Standing Column Well Systems – circulate water in pipes below the earth, where water is heated, then delivered into the home for use.

Open Loop Systems are the easiest to…

water bottle image.jpg

“Purified by equatorial winds.” “Pure as the driven snow.” “Resonates with the energy and frequency of well-being.” Your … bottled water?

Bottled water companies use some fancy phrases to tell you what’s in their products.
But personally, when it comes to purification, I’ll take reverse osmosis over equatorial winds.

Environmental Working Group wants to make sure bottled water companies give you accurate and useful information about their water sources, purification techniques and water quality testing results. But first, we need to do some research. And that’s where you come in.

Join the 2009 Bottled Water Label Scavenger Hunt.
Here’s how to get involved:

  1. The next time you need to buy a bottle of water (even we EWG’ers sometimes forget our reusable bottle) choose a non-sparkling, unflavored water bottled in glass or clear plastic.
  2. Carefully remove the entire label from the bottle. We need all the information from the label, so if necessary, cut the plastic…

Over the last 2 years, the Fair Trade Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) took part in a study by the international Fair Trade Labeling Organization(FLO) to figure out exactly how fair trade standards could and should apply to travel in the South African region - identifying the region as a beneficial recipient for a pilot project in fair trade tourism.

Armed with a valid understanding of fair trade travel standards and practices, the initiative allows the FTTSA to proceed in certifying travel packages and content. The organization will also work closely with fair trade professionals throughout Europe as well as other South African community organizations.

“Although FLO’s current mandate precludes any new intervention in tourism, FLO has endorsed the upcoming FTTSA-led pilot project as a way of generating further knowledge on Fairtrade tourism,” said Jennifer Seif, FTTSA Executive Director. “The real impacts of Fair Trade Tourism accrue in destinations - to workers, communities and…

Whether its hiking, backpacking, camping, climbing diving or more, adventure travel enthusiasts now have the tools to do it all and share their experiences and ideas with others. MyAdventures.com is a new and free online social network designed to be a central hub for people to share photos, videos and travel journals, while gaining access to a number of adventure travel organizations and news sources.

Based loosely on the traditions of social adventure clubs from the early 20th century, MyAdventures.com focuses its features on its members’ passions and adventurous spirits.

According to MyAdventures.com founder, Keith Bates: “No matter what your adventure area of interest, you’ll find people who share that interest, as well as information about it. And there is always something new popping up on the site. I’m surprised every time I log in.”

The site also incorporate the open standards of Facebook Connect, which allows new and current members to register on the site using their…
