A small item in the Food section of the Washington Post caught my eye yesterday. It seems that the Monterey Bay Aquarium has created a new pocket card you can leave on the table at restaurants, either thanking them for serving sustainable seafood, or encouraging them to do so. The Post’s Jane Black wrote about it in the All We Can Eat blog. She found out about the Seafood Action Cards while

I just learned that Bethesda Green, a community non-profit group, is teaming up with the Maryland Home Performance With ENERGY STAR program to offer discounted home energy audits to groups of five or more homes in Bethesda, Maryland. Bethesda Green explains it on its Home Energy Audit Bundle Deals page. If your neighborhood gets 5-10 homes, you each would get a 15 percent discount on the cost of

Car travel, especially across the States via smog-infested super-highways cluttered with gas-guzzling, unkempt vehicles, is a sore spot on America’s ongoing addiction to fossil fuel.

For years, the auto industry has been at odds with environmentalists and individual states over fuel standards. Thirteen states, led by California, have been pressing the Government to allow them to impose stricter standards on vehicles.

Of course, these demands were repeatedly blocked by the errant Bush Administration.

This week, however, a new horizon just may be beaming with pride over the twisting, blacktop landscape. The Obama administration proposed regulations that will force automakers to green up their act, allowing US car manufacturers, environmentalists and lawmakers to reach a landmark agreement on setting auto efficiency standards for cars and light trucks.

“For the first time in history, we have set in motion a national policy aimed at both increasing gas mileage and decreasing greenhouse…

Students traveling the world in search of a complete and well-rounded education now have the means to offset their carbon footprint, wherever their feet may tread. Leading study-abroad provider, GlobaLinks , has formed a partnership with the statewide Colorado Carbon Fund to help keep students green while traveling overseas. Students will be able to offset the airline miles for their study abroad program and support renewable energy projects throughout the state of Colorado.

Eco-conscious travel students also get an eco-friendly "departure package", including reusable "must haves" when traveling the world - reusable, recyclable bags and water bottles.

"GlobaLinks is pleased to make a contribution to the Colorado Carbon Fund for each student evaluation form received," said Cynthia Banks, GlobaLinks Executive Director. "To date, we’ve donated $634 and are pleased to help support innovative new clean-energy projects in our home state."

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, a leader in responsible tourism, promotes environmental stewardship and sustainability awareness via the implementation of its proprietary Green Partnership Program - a company-wide pledge to better handle waste management, energy and water conservation. Under the manta of “reduce, reuse and recycle,” the hotel chain’s environmental standards have served as a model for industry leaders as well as competitors.

Now, Fairmont is taking its eco-awareness efforts a step further by means of natural conservation. As a response to the growing honey bee shortage crisis in the U.S., the company is setting up a “bee preserve” of sorts in the nation’s capital, making The Fairmont Washington, D.C. the new home to over 100,000 Italian honeybees.

Following the example set by the company’s first honey bee endeavor at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, Fairmont Washington, D.C. will the first and only hotel in the city to take on the challenge of raising honey bees….

Check out this timber frame design for a timber house in Maine using sacred geometry. In this instance the Golden Section and Fibonacci Series which will become the basis of our client’s home design.

The Golden Section will be used to define the building proportions: scale of massing elements, room layout, height and width, even door layout and size. In mathematics and the arts, two quantities are in proportion if the
ratio between the sum of those quantities and the larger is the same as the ratio between the larger and the smaller. Examples of architecture utilizing the Golden Section are common throughout history, examples such as the Parthenon and the Great Pyramids are most notable. In Art, a great debate still exists as to whether or not Leonardo da Vinci proportioned his paintings according to the golden ratio while creating the Mona Lisa and De Divina Proportione.

Additionally, the Fibonacci Series will determine proportions of the building elements. The intersecting…
