China
China is a country with an ambitious solar agenda. When reducing its dependence on coal and oil imports as well as infamously high greenhouse gas emissions, demand for new solar modules in China could be as high as 232 MW each year from now until 2012. China installed about 50MW of solar capacity last year, strong growth from the 20 MW in 2007.

PV companies have been hard hit by the drop…

Green Globe International, Inc., famous for its Green Globe brand certification for awareness of environmental responsibility and response to climate change, has partnered up with the corporate social responsibility advocate Responsible Business Alliance (RBA). The pairing is aiming to bring environmentally sustainable business models to the Central American and Caribbean travel markets, with RBA as the preferred representative of the Green Globe brand and its associated certification systems. The effort will focus mainly on Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Honduras.

RBA will basically use the Green Globe "accreditation" to encourage businesses to adopt environmentally sustainable criteria, including participation in the Green Globe Certification program and the Green Globe Index.

There are two general types of timber frame systems, each having several variations: Common Purlin systems consisting of King Post, Queens Post (see modified Queen Post Truss below), and Hammer Beam frames for example, and Common Rafter systems such as Collar Tie, Principal Purlin, and Ridge Beam frames. There are many reasons to choose one frame type over the other and costs vary as well.

Common Purlin systems, or timber frame bents, are typically assembled on the first floor deck, then raised as whole units into place by a crane (see photos bottom), connected with the joinery, and secured with wooden pegs. Because of the structural integrity of these bents, this system of timber framing allows for an open, flexible floor plan.

Common Rafter systems are raised either as ‘walls’, one timber at a time. Timbers are erected in succession; one end post erected first, then a connecting beam at the second floor level is secured to the post, then another end timber is joined to the…

The swine flu has generated a run on hand sanitizer. I saw some Organic EO Hand Sanitizer at Whole Foods and decided to look into it.  They use Organic Lavender Essential Oil, Organic Alcohol (non-GMO),  and Aloe Vera.  It is not tested on animals.  The small Corte Madera,  California company that makes it is struggling [...]
