What to Look for in Energy Efficient Windows:

In 2005 the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) developed a label to provide consumers with energy performance data on windows, doors, and skylights. This label helps you compare one product to another, listing the manufacturer, a product description, a source for additional information, and ratings on the following energy performance characteristics (windows and doors are rated as whole systems, glazing and frame).

U-Factor: A window’s U-Factor measures how well a unit prevents heat from escaping (the inverse of its R-value). U-Factor ratings are usually between 0.25 and 1.25. The lower the U-value, the greater its ability to resist heat transfer and better insulate the home.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient rating indicates how well a window, door, or skylight blocks solar heat by measuring solar radiation released into the home. The lower the coefficient value, the less solar heat is… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Discovery’s popular green-living brand, Planet Green, will be ushering in the end of summer with “Blue August” - a month-long campaign of on-and-off-air programming focusing on the world’s most precious resource: water.

Since its launch in June 2008, Planet Green has focused on successfully educating people on the impact we have on our own planet and how to live a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle. You would be hard-pressed to find an eco-minded individual who had not already heard of the brand, its website and/or cable TV channel.

The popular brand is hoping to bring this level of recognition to the cause for the world’s water bodies.

Blue August will feature the network premiere of the “Blue Planet” series, hosted by conservationists and explorers Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau, as well as all new episodes of Focus Earth with Bob Woodruff.

“With this special month of programming, Planet Green is shining a spotlight on the critical and complex role our oceans and water…

World Oceans Day is a celebration of sorts to foster greater awareness of the crucial role of the ocean in our lives and the important ways each of us can help. With oceans accounting for over 70% of the planet’s surface - an interconnected body of salt water spanning the entire globe - their "health" plays an integral part in the status of our world.

They control our climate, regulating the planet’s temperatures and wind patterns. They support the economies of our communities by way of providing food and shorelines protection. They provide natural resources for energy and trade, while enabling human culture and recreation.

In light of World Oceans Day 2009, many marine-conscious advocates are looking for ways to educate and participate in the effort to protect the oceans as they face unprecedented pressures from human-inflicted causes - causes that are altering the marine environment at such a rate that affects and will ultimately destroy the most vulnerable marine… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

WorldNomads.com has just opened its “Van-Tastic Adventure” in which travelers are given the chance to win a 6-week Australian roadtrip. Capturing their experiences documentary-style, the travelers are then eligible to win $10,000 cash and frlights from Virgin Blue.

Beginning in August 2009 and continuing for 11 months, each “Van-Tastic Adventure” team will travel throughout the country for 6 weeks. The teams will be designated to a certain state or territory of Australia and will be supplied with driving routes and itineraries, access to YHA hostels, national parks and camping sites.

“We’ll fly a team, of up to 2 people to Australia, and give them the ‘Van-Tastic Van’ to drive across the country for 6 weeks,” said Amanda Byrne, WorldNomads.com Global Programs Manager. “They’ll share their adventure online, making videos, stories, and posting photos, and ultimately create a mini-video documentary of their trip.” says Amanda.

We took advantage of a rainy day a couple of weeks ago to visit our clients’ timber home in South Peak Resort, Lincoln, NH. The home is progressing nicely and should be completed within the next eight weeks. Chris drew a landscaping plan to submit to the South Peak Resort ARB (Architectural Review Board). Landscaping will begin as soon as approval is given.

The stone fireplace in the great room is gorgeous and complements the timber frame beautifully. The fireplace in the basement recreation room is also coming along.

The exterior braces and timber porches (Douglas fir) add architectural style and provide a hint as to the beauty of the timber frame interior.
