Environmental authorities have teamed with 14 African countries to develop an African Environmental eLearning Network in an effort to strengthen eco-education programs through technology.

During the 4th eLearning Africa Conference in Senegal, environmental representatives at a UNEP seminar agreed to roles and responsibilities in establishing and African Environmental eLearning Network to share expertise, best practices and eLearning content.

The network, which will be made up of a number of sub-regional hubs and national eLearning centers, will work to build strategies and action plans to mainstream technology supported learning to support their work in the areas of training, education and awareness raising.

The seminar was convened in response to a decision endorsed by the 12th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in Johannesburg last year in which the environment ministers called for a wide range of actions to strengthen environmental…

After a long evaluation process, Naperville, Illinois’ Hotel Arista has finally earned an official LEED certification almost a full year since its opening, becoming the state’s first hotel to ever achieve LEED status.

Situated 45 minutes west of downtown Chicago, the 144-room modern and residential-style hotel offers “urban sophistication in a suburban setting,” balancing contemporary amenities and design with eco-friendliness.

“We are thrilled to have accomplished this certification, which not only demonstrates that being environmentally friendly is how we were constructed from the ground up, but also as the way we operate and the very core of what Hotel Arista stands for,” says Jeff Wardlaw, general manager, Hotel Arista.

The LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System, established and managed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is a voluntary, consensus-based standard to support and certify successful green building design, construction…

Hidden Valley Cabins are officially the first 100% carbon neutral “ecolodge” in Queensland, Australia, serving as a role model for the tourism industry in their commitment to environmental improvement for over 20 years.

Twenty two years in the making, the country’s first carbon neutral resort and tour business, Hidden Valley Cabins, has recently earned an “Advanced Ecotourism Certification,” from Ecotourism Australia, the national body for Australia’s ecotourism industry.

Visitors to Hidden Valley’s aptly named “Solar Eco Cabins and Interpretive Center” are treated to awe-inspiring nature tours in the spectacular and pristine natural environment, while learning “hands-on” the methods in which solar power technology is utilized at the resort.

“Hidden Valley is not on grid power and, over the years, we have developed ways to decrease our reliance on generator power while making sure our guests enjoy all the comfort and facilities they need,” said Ross McLennan, Hidden Valley…

Our design for the timber home utilizing sacred geometry is on the fast track! Jeremy is working on the timber frame design and Chris is completing the elevations. The builder will take the plans to get final permits next week and work will begin right away on the foundation and site work.

The home design specifies a Insulated Concrete Foundation (ICF), evacuated tubes on the south facing portions of the home for domestic hot water and heating, SIP panels (structural insulated panels) for the walls and roof which will surround the timber frame, a greenhouse in which the homeowner will grow many organic vegetables, and a root cellar in a portion of the basement.

These are the preliminary floor plans. The room locations and proportions are governed within the design process by the use of sacred geometries such as the Golden Section and Rectangle and the Fibonacci series. Using these proportioning systems within the design process produces harmonious and natural spaces that are felt…
