allEWGbadges_KSCA.jpgToday we invite you to join an important conversation about our nation’s chemical policy - and how we’re going to reform it. The fact that we need to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) is hardly in dispute.

The Government Accounting Office (GAO) put TSCA on its ‘high-risk’ list earlier this year. Even the American Chemical Council (ACC) acknowledged the need for change.

On the Kid-Safe blog you’ll find all the info you need on TSCA reform - in one convenient place:

  • Important action opportunities,
  • Timely updates about the bill’s status in Congress, and
  • Thought-provoking commentary from policy experts, decision makers, and the media.

There’s a lot to love about the 21st Century. Wireless. Hybrids. Ipods. Hockey in June. But modern life comes at the price of a body burden of pollutants. The stuff we like is amazingly light, pliable, tough, tiny, shatter-proof, stain-proof, waterproof,…

In today’s bad economy, travelers are still planning summer trips. However, with once-again-rising gas prices stopping some travelers in their tracks, can price incentives really help or hurt the travel economy?

A new survey by BedandBreakfast.com, the largest online B&B directory and reservation network worldwide, suggests that nearly 80% of summer travelers plan to take as many or more trips this summer as they did last year, with trips ranging evenly between “staycations” – staying closer to home – and “go-cations” – flying or driving to more distant destinations.

However, with projected summer gas prices approaching upwards of $4 per gallon, some are rethinking their plans.

“With gas prices reaching a 2009 high of $71 per barrel, and prices at the pump rising by forty cents in the last month, we are pleased that our survey revealed that nearly 70% of respondents are still planning two to four trips between now and Labor Day,” commented Sandy Soule, Marketing VP at <a title=”BedandBreakfast.com” href=”http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/”…

American Airlines is now the very first US carrier to test next-generation technology and procedures that were developed to significantly reduce fuel use and carbon emissions under the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE).

The test was conducted during a normal, scheduled flight from Paris to Miami, using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

AIRE is the first large-scale environmental initiative bringing together aviation players from both sides of the Atlantic, with partners including the FAA, the European Commission, Boeing, Airbus, various air navigation service providers and a number of airlines.

“It is critical that the aviation industry works with our air traffic control partners to demonstrate the benefits of NextGen technology today,” said Bob Reding, American’s Executive Vice President – Operations. “By implementing this technology as quickly as possible, we can make real and meaningful strides to reduce our impact on the environment, increase…

A few weeks ago in a blog post, I sang the praises of Florida’s outstanding Green Lodging program (FGLP). Established in 2004 by Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), FGLP’s small but dedicated staff has helped hundreds of properties statewide implement meaningful green initiatives, and has made their program a model for the country.

That’s why I was so saddened to learn that due to drastic budget cuts, the FGLP as we know it will cease to exist on July 1st. According to a recent article in the Orlando Business Journal, the program’s budget of $337,000 was slashed to $63,000, and three of its four staff positions were eliminated.

You read that correctly – one employee and $63,000 to support the current stable of over 500 designated green properties, in addition to handling hundreds more that have filed their applications and are on the waiting list for FGLP approval.

Beginning July 1, initial site visits to determine compliance with program standards will become…

With so much great stuff to share, I figured I would just type up a quick summary of each so everybody can [...]

New organic garden

Welcome Garden #2!

Around May and June I become a little obsessive with my garden.  Over the years, it has grown from 4 tomato plants to now 19 beds, 9 heirloom apple trees complete with their own birth announcement, 2 peach trees, 7 blueberry bushes, and 2 grape vines. Okay.  This did not happen in one year, but over the years, I have expanded the garden like you would expand a family.  Sometimes I think I am Eddie Albert from Green Acres. Remember that show with Eva Garbo? Just like Eddie Albert’s character,  I am a lawyer turned gentlewoman farmer.

This year was a leap year.  Although my apple trees are little, I thought I could protect them from the deer by surrounding them with four foot deer fencing.  Apple buds are quite enticing and they outsmarted me by nipping at the buds through the fencing.  They must have push the fencing with their noses.  One particular apple tree did not bloom at all this year and I hope that it is not dead.

My apple trees are like my…

A new eco friendly fade is eating weeds.  Dandelions greens, stinging nettles, purslane are starting to show up at farmer’s markets and high end supermarkets.
“The interest in weed cuisine also taps into the current movement toward organic and local foods; as lawn owners have long complained, weeds are hardy and require [...]
