The September 2008 Special Green Building Issue features an interview with NH Architect Jeremy Bonin on energy efficient home design, sustainability, and timber framing.

Writer Peter Lobred asks Jeremy Bonin, a LEED accredited architect and the author of the timber frame book, TIMBER FRAMES: Designing Your Custom Home, pointed questions about building a timber frame home and incorporating sustainable design. After explaining some of the catch phrases in the green building industry, Jeremy answers questions such as “What are some basic considerations – or the most crucial elements – that consumers / architects can incorporate into their plans for sustainable design?” and “Does there seem to be a natural fit between timber frame homes and green considerations?”

Asked about the cost versus benefits of energy efficient home design and sustainable options, Jeremy reminds homeowners that the simplest solutions are not only the most cost effective and usually provide the largest… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Well, do you?

Clint Eastwood/Harry Callahan’s pithy question rings in my head, every time I read the chemical lobby’s defense of bisphenol A(BPA), a high-volume industrial plastics chemical. genes.jpg

Many experiments have shown that BPA, a synthetic estrogen as well as a plastics hardener, disrupts the endocrine system and causes a growing list of chronic, often permanent disorders in lab animals.

To which industry routinely responds: 1) animals aren’t people, and 2) in people, BPA is, as one industry spokesman put it, “efficiently metabolized and rapidly eliminated from the body.”

Scientists who think BPA is as bad for people as for lab animals can’t prove their cases by experimenting on people.

Epidemiological studies of human populations can’t isolate the impact of a single chemical like BPA. The human body burden, now comprising close to 500 chemicals, according to Environmental Working Group’s biomonitoring tests, is an unintended consequence of the…

The advent of the the personal solar panel probably started with those solar powered calculators way back when. I remember I used to rip those little sun suckers out of as many calculators as I could get a hold of and try and make something cool… it never worked out.
But nowadays, solar powered accessories are [...]

Straw Weeds
Look what is hiding under my mulch.

Most people schedule vacations to destress from their hectic lives.  Some down time they say.   Heck, I need an extra week of vacation just from the stress of getting ready for vacation.

I don’t know about you, but I always try and tie up loose ends before I go away.  It is so stressful thinking about what I would have to come home to after vacation.  So, I make my enormous list which is probably too hard for Superwoman to accomplish and ultimately end up cutting my losses a day or two before V Day to what I really need to get done…

The worse part is I am in gardening mode.  (For my loyal readers, you know the second garden full of corn?) For those of you who are gardeners you will understand this. For those who are not, it is endless weeding, fertilizing, mulching, checking for bugs, composting, and so on and so on. Talk about sweat equity.

I add “worrying”  to the list as well since I have had numerous seasons of cabbage moths…

I saw an article that mentioned that the artificial sweeters used in chewing gum could cause problems. A Google search shows many articles that talk about sweeteners such as Sorbitol, Mannitol, and Aspertame causing stomach problems in some people.  Better living through chemicals. Also the mechanism of chewing causes swallowing lots of [...]
