Holy Cross Electric in Colorado has announced an additional $250,000 in solar rebates for 2009.

Holy Cross has already given out over $1.1 million in rebates this year, and given the overwhelming demand, has decided to reallocate other funds into more solar rebates.

The rebate will remain at $2 per watt, with a cap of $12,000. For more information on reserving rebates in that area - contact us.

In 2009, the dubious distinction of the “allergen of the year” was awarded to a group of chemicals most of us have never heard of: mixed dialkyl thioureas. Mixed who?

These chemicals are common additives found in everyday neoprene synthetic rubber products - everything from computer mouse pads to shoes, athletic braces and wetsuits.

Based on 10 years of research conducted by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group, dialkyl thioureas prove to be the most common culprit of neoprene allergy.

According to a press release from the group’s 2009 annual meeting:

Many cases of allergic contact dermatitis from the allergens in neoprene have been reported, including cases caused by rubber orthopedic braces, prostheses, splints, and foot supports; athletic shoes; rubber masks; swim goggles; wet suits; a slimming suit; a computer wrist rest; a sleep apnea mask; neoprene gloves; and rubber-based materials in automobiles…

Blackle is a version of Google search with the screen predominantly black to save energy over a white screen.  A blog post theorizes that a black Google home page would save 750 Megawatt/hours a year of power. We did a measurement with our trusty Killawatt power meter and verified a savings of about 8% in [...]

Deformed Carrot

This is my third year of growing carrots from seed.  I learned alot about growing carrots over the last two years,  but obviously not enough given how my carrots look. See the picture above.  So, what have I learned?

About two months later, I could see the carrots shoulders.  Ripe for the picking?  I waited for a couple more weeks and then with a might yank, out came my first carrot.  Stunted and all.  My carrot looked like it was missing its bottom.  I did not have a clue why my carrot looked so deformed. Fat and dumpy.

I asked a farmer friend why my carrots were so…
