Solar Energy04 Aug 2009 09:01 am

Xcel Energy is proposing unfair rake hikes for new solar energy customers in Colorado. These hikes would unjustly charge new solar owners a minimum usage fee every month simply for the “privilege” to use Xcel’s energy grid.

Solar energy not only helps reduce the load demand for Xcel’s energy grid, but the solar energy surge (pun intended) has created demand for new businesses setting up shop in Colorado, subsequently leading to more electricity use. In fact, Colorado is Xcel’s #1 profit source, and just reported increased profits on higher electricity rates.

Please join us for the Public Utilities Commission open forum on this topic, the more support we can get there - the better:

August 5th - 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
1560 Broadway, Suite 1550
Denver, CO 80202

Please Note: THIS PROPOSED POLICY DOES NOT APPLY TO EXISTING SOLAR ENERGY OWNERS. If passed, the proposal would go into effect in April 2010, and therefore only solar energy owners after that date would be subject to…

By this point in the summer you’ve probably thoroughly researched and hunted down just the sunscreen you want. If you haven’t, quick, it’s already August! Read our sunscreen report and use our search widget to find a safe, effective choice for your family.

Whichever sunscreen you choose, don’t blow it and get burned now by applying too little. A thin layer of sunscreen just won’t protect you. Why not? Because the protection promised on the label is based on a certain thickness on the skin, and if you’re skimping (we know, those tubes add up), then you’re not going to get the protection you want - or paid for.

How will you know if you’re wearing enough?

Since achieving the recommended thickness of 2 mg/cm^2 (yeah, right) isn’t something you can easily estimate, let’s talk in terms we can all understand: if you haven’t yet bought a 2nd or 3rd bottle of sunscreen yet this summer, you’re probably under applying. …

From the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Weekly Digest Bulletin

WASHINGTON – For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership recognized 20 partners for generating the most green electricity on site. Combined, the top 20 partners are generating and consuming more than 736 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of on-site green power annually. This is equivalent to the electricity needed to power more than 61,000 American homes annually. The partners’ contributions are helping to expand America’s renewable energy portfolio, improve the nation’s energy security, and reduce their organizations’ greenhouse gas emissions.

“These companies are leading a nationwide move to the clean energy economy, one that can create million of jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and protect against global climate change,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “Our Green Power Partnership leaders are setting the standard for our clean…

One of my favorite times of the year is when the Shark Week series airs on The Discovery Channel. Having always wanted to go into Shark Biology/Ecology, this show lets me dream of what might have been. The first show I watched was the 10 Deadliest Sharks and I was a bit surprised at some [...]

Green Building04 Aug 2009 09:00 am

Bonin Architects is design and renderings for the reconstruction of the 4200 square foot Tattersall Farm timber frame barn in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Once a large and magnificent working dairy barn comprised of heavy timber construction, it was partially destroyed by fire many years ago and eventually the barn collapsed. Today, only a few of the original timbers are still located at the site, which we hope to incorporate into the design for aesthetic and historical purposes. Part of the original foundation and two silo foundations are still present; the main barn foundation will be replaced. Currently planning is underway by the board of trustees to reconstruct the barn for multi-use purposes which will be available to the public for educational and recreational uses once funding is secured. The main farmhouse is still intact and is used as the caretaker’s residence.

The timber frame barn will be a multi-use building able to host educational seminars, conferences, and outdoor…
