Economic Climate Opens Door for Small Wind Energy Projects

With utility-scale wind project developers cash-strapped and unable to obtain financing for large wind farms, small wind power project developers see a window of opportunity. by Sarah Lozanova, Contributor Wisconsin, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

Very few large-scale wind projects are able to obtain financing under the current economic climate. But falling turbine, steel and labor prices have created the perfect environment for mid-scale wind energy projects to thrive. Although total new installed capacity in 2009 may not rival the impressive 8,900 MW installed in North America in 2008, a golden opportunity exists for smaller wind development.

Small wind projects range in size from 100 kW to 30 MW and typically serve schools, farms, rural villages, businesses and municipal utility companies. Because these type of installations can access funding from various sources, they are less vulnerable to the credit crisis…

New Geothermal Heat Extraction Process To Deliver Clean Power Generation
Pacific Northwest National Lab’s advanced heat recovery method makes most of low-temp ‘hot rock’ resources.
by Geoffrey Harvey, PNNL, Washington, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

A new method for capturing significantly more heat from low-temperature geothermal resources holds promise for generating virtually pollution-free electrical energy. Scientists at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) will determine if their innovative approach can safely and economically extract and convert heat from vast untapped geothermal resources.

The goal is to enable power generation from low-temperature geothermal resources at an economical cost. In addition to being a clean energy source without any greenhouse gas emissions, geothermal is also a steady and dependable source of power.

“By the end of the calendar year, we plan to have a functioning bench-top prototype generating…

How can dirty, gritty charcoal be green? Charcoal is known as Bio-Char or Bio-Charcoal to scientists. There is charcoal made from invasive tree species or harvested from sustainably managed areas.  Lump charcoal is also better to use than cheaper briquettes that could contain toxic coal dust.
Folks in Tanzania are also developing alternative charcoals.
