If you think you’re living sustainably and are up for a little challenge, check out “Consumer Consequences”, an interactive game designed to illustrate the impact of our lifestyles on the Earth. Consumer Consequences is part of American Public Media’s™ special series, “Consumed,” which explores whether the modern American lifestyle is sustainable in the long run.

Consumer Consequences asks a series of questions about your lifestyle, and as you play, it will show you how many “Earths” of natural resources it would take to sustain all 6.6 billion humans… if everyone lived like you.

The impact of your lifestyle is calculated based on the “ecological footprint” model created by American Public Media’s research partner, Redefining Progress.

Consumer Consequences lets you compare your lifestyle with other players and gives you a chance to modify your choices and reduce your footprint.

greenhouse.gifAre you trying to reduce your family’s exposure to flame retardants?

It’s a good idea since they’re associated with long-term health effects - especially in children whose developing bodies are more sensitive to chemical exposures. Plus, they’re all over your house.

We’d like to believe our government is effectively protecting us from toxic chemicals that are increasingly linked to health problems and found in many common household items, but it’s not.

We think you deserve better. So we created a Healthy Home Tip Series to make it easier to safeguard your family’s health from the poorly studied toxic chemicals in use today.

Tip 3: Learn to minimize your exposure to fire retardants at home.
Our Healthy Home Tip makes it easy for you to identify fire retardants in your home and take some simple steps to reduce your family’s exposure to them. You’ll learn:

  • Why you should minimize your family’s exposure.
  • What household products contain fire retardants.
  • How you can reduce…

Nothing irritates us more than flying, crawling, or otherwise annoying insects invading our space!  Most of us flash back to a 1980’s horror show, and throw our green sensibilities into the trash can as we reach for a can of insecticide.

But wait!  There are green ways to control pests without resorting to harmful chemicals and sprays. One of the most effective is simple boric acid.   Boric acid is completely non-toxic to humans and pets, and kills insects as it is such a fine powder that it is absorbed into their lungs so they can no longer breathe.   Sprinkling this around the periphery of your home is quite effective, as is scattering it throughout your carpets to control fleas.

Many pest control companies, such as Fleabusters, use products based on boric acid.   When searching for a pest control company, ask them about nontoxic control methods such as this. Another great thing about boric acid is that it works physically instead of chemically, so insects and fleas…

Some folks live far away from recycling centers.  Think Green From Home is a service from Waste management that allows you to recycle everything from CFL’s to Batteries to Bottles by mail.  Unfortuneately, it does cost money to purchase a recycling kit, relegating this to probably only more dedicated green folks. $16.95 to recycle 13 [...]
