Earlier this month, EWG released a report about the Chesapeake Bay water quality crisis. The report focuses on agriculture’s heavy - if unintended - damage to the Bay, specifically the inability of the six Bay states (Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, and New York) to cope with this agricultural pollution, over which the federal government has no jurisdiction.
Blending a thrilling ecotourism cruise with the peace of mind that the environment is less impacted by your actions is now a possibility. Ecotourism is one of the most popular types of tourism that travelers across the globe are taking part in. Have you ever wondered who is ensuring the future pristine state of these travel hot spots?
In the Galapagos Islands, tourism is the first source of income, derived from the 140,000 tourists per year that visit the islands. This provides a unique challenge for cruise tour operators in Ecuador.
Adventure Associates, a custom luxury Galapagos cruise provider, has created The Galapagos Foundation. This Ecuador based non-profit organization’s mission is to provide funding for conservation projects committed to sustainable development of the Galapagos Islands.
The current issues being faced in the Galapagos Islands stem from the explosive population growth and disregard for the pristine environment by many tourists. The simple, yet…

1. Don’t use toilet seat covers
Strange as it may sound, but these wafer-thin little pieces of paper do nothing for your touche. While they give you a feel-good barrier between you and a public toilet, it is basically only that. According to Dr. Sherry Marts, scientific director of the Society for Women’s Health Research, “It’s [...]

Do you smell of body odor?I know. My sister had to tell me that my crystal was not working. So, Lift up your arm and take a whiff. Pleasant or nasty? (You can be the judge on this one.) So what is an Earth lov’in gal or guy who wants to smell BO free to do? Lafe’s Natural and Organic Deodorants can fix all of that. But how you wonder? See how I became an enlightened smell-free human, grasshopper. (I know. You are waiting with bated breath.)
My introduction to deodorant started with a blue Secret roll on. How many of you used Secret when you were younger? It was the deodorant du jour for many of us. All of a sudden in my twenties, it seemed that the newspapers were abound with stories that aluminum caused Alzheimer. And guess what contains aluminum? Deodorant. I immediately switched to a crystal rock (not to be confused with a pet rock.) Although the jury is still out on whether aluminum contributes to…

Dr. Beverly Wright is being honored this year as one of 10 recipients of The Heinz Awards.
In honor of its 15th year, this prestigious award focuses on environmental heroes who, “like [the late] John Heinz, have confronted environmental concerns with a spirit of innovation and who demonstrate the same blend of action and creativity in approaching the protection of our environment.”
About The Heinz Awards
Over the years, the award has spotlighted and rewarded people in a number of areas important to Heinz, in whose name the award was established. Being one of the first of its kind to rank and certify lodging based on sustainable, “green” practices, Green Key was developed by a leading environmental engineering firm with support from the Canadian Government to withstand the scrutiny of a wide-range of environmental experts, and has been repeatedly praised by the U.S. Office of the Federal Environmental Executive (OFEE), the Partnership for Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria and the Rainforest Alliance.
“The Green Key Eco-Rating Program is the only one of its kind that addresses the specific needs of hotel operators,” said Arthur Hall Adams, a LEED Accredited Professional and CEO of the environmental architecture and design firm AHAdams & Company. “This program is sound environmentally and fiscally and is an exciting addition to the ‘green’ movement.”
Green Key is also listed in the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s (AH&LA) Green Resource Center.
“Our research indicated that a robust third-party audit verification…

Being a native New Yorker, I am always excited to promote green initiatives that positively impact close to home.
As part of a large initiative to support sustainable tourism in New York, a new program to officially certify hotels and other types of travel-lodging as being “green” throughout the state has finally gone into practice.
New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has already initiated the program with the induction of 43 hotels and inns for their eco-friendly, sustainable practices, including energy efficiency, environmental management, pollution prevention and resource conservation.
The new certification program places a large emphasis on the state’s diverse natural resources as tourism destinations, connecting travelers to green businesses and assisting New York’s tourism businesses to “go green,” while allowing hoteliers to focus on saving energy, trimming waste disposal, using water efficiently and conserving resources – all while effectively…
