A new buzz word arising in the green media today is “VOC“, or ” Volatile Organic Compound“. Hmmm, you may say, but what does that mean? Although there is no “cut and dry” definition found anywhere, it is used to describe any chemical that can leach dangerous gases into the air at varying temperatures– 0ften times, even at room temperature. Brand new homes off-gas the most. This is because most off-gassing is done in the first year.
What does that mean to us? In many typically designed and built homes, VOCs are everywhere. Carpeting, older paneling, paint, solvents and cleaners, and wood preservatives all contain VOCs. These VOCs can be carcinogenic, or can cause respiratory problems - among other health issues. Also, they are a significant contributor to “sick building syndrome” , a condition where people get sick just from being inside the building.
