With limited land available, especially lakefront properties, many people are purchasing old camps and cottages to tear the house down and rebuild a new, energy efficient home.

Traditionally, a bulldozer or other large piece of equipment levels the house in a matter of minutes and the debris is taken to a landfill. A green alternative would be to tear the house down in stages, carefully preserving the material and selling it at a demolition auction.

What can be salvaged and reused from a tear down?

  • Building components such as doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, etc.
  • Glass
  • Metals
  • Brick
  • Wood
  • Asphalt
  • Concrete
  • Gypsum
  • Plastics
  • Landscaping, including trees, stumps, and rocks

On the other hand, you might want to check out a demolition auction to find recycled materials if you are building a new home or remodeling your existing home. These types of auctions are held at the house to be torn down, and bidders are allowed to tour the home prior to the auction. You can get everything from fixtures,…

3747255977_3be16c6dcc.jpgIt’s the Thursday before Halloween and my kids haven’t quite decided what to be. Top runners at this point (it changes daily) are pretty standard: witch and princess.

And no, I’m not sewing their costumes from scratch (far from it, actually: I’m midnight emailing friends whose kids have cool costumes to borrow).

So when I read this week’s report about lead in face paints, I was (for once!) glad to be behind. Now I can praise the beauty of plain faces under pointy hats and crowns BEFORE promising to paint them.

What’s wrong with face painting?
Nothing - IF the paints are safe for our skin, especially the more sensitive skin of little trick-or-treaters. But if there’s a chance of lead in the paint, and other heavy metals, too (think: nickel, chromium, and cobalt), it’s a better bet to skip the paint. The potential of short and longer-term allergic reactions to heavy metals isn’t worth the risk, nor is the possibility of adding to a child’s lead burden.

Paint safely if you…

Having been converted into a chocolate lover late in life, I was excited to explore new and exotic chocolate flavors. I can say I have eaten the fruit of a freshly picked cacao pod, chewed a raw bean, and grated freshly roasted coco beans into milk to make hot chocolate- so I like to really [...]

Solar Hot water Evacuated tube collectors  seem to be the rage at the International Builder’s Show last winter.  I don’t know why,  but those gleaming dark tubes just caught my eye.  The more I learned about them, the more I liked the whole concept.  Putting a solar hot water flat panel collector on my roof just did not appeal to me.  I had my share of roof leaking/ water issues and just did want to go there again.  (Whether this actually happens with panels does not matter. Fear is a powerful motivator.)  Evacuated tubes on the other hand can be installed vertical or horizontal like a fence as well at an angle similar to the solar hot water panels. I like flexibility.

In addition, every vendor I spoke to touted that these tube were so much more efficient than its cousin, the flat panel collector.  Are they more expensive than the panels? Yes.  But, I was assured I would make up the difference in no…
