Helping a local community to improve a trail through the jungle might not be everyone’s idea of a perfect holiday; but for Dave and Meredith it proved to be fascinating insight into a traditional way of life that is under threat from the rapid pace of tourism in Southern Thailand. As part of their holiday, the couple visited a homestay in Ban Talae Nok, and jumped at the chance to help the villagers clear the local nature trail and make it safe for future tourists.

“We are passionate about this type of tourism because it benefits both parties,” explained Meredith. “For us, it enriched our lives and informed our sense of the world. The villagers have become stewards of their own experience; making decisions about how to introduce tourism into their lives, rather than having Western tourism forced upon them.”

Founded in the wake of the 2004 tsunami, Andaman Discoveries has grown from providing emergency disaster relief into an internationally acclaimed community-based…

The hospitality industry is opening doors to a new, green future with a little help from Pineapple Hospitality’s new “Green Earth Green-Key” cards, key packets and key sleeves.

Until now, lodging properties looking to improve their environmental impact and promote its green policies to guests relied on recycled and recyclable cardboard key cards – and they did not work too well. The cards did not hold up well to wear and tear and were rather squeamish when it came to water.

Pineapple’s Green Earth Green-Key cards deliver a much better solution, offering a range of recycled and biodegradable cards to hospitality managers that are both durable and affordable.

“The Green Earth Green-Key cards are great,” said Samuel Askew, Hotel Manager at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort. “They are environmentally clean and sustainable – and they work. They perfectly fit the needs of our resort, and they are better for us in terms of both functionality and cost.”

“Hotel keycards are one of the…

Led by Vin Marottoli, the company has been organizing food and wine tours to amazing throughout the world for 28 years.

Wine Lovers’ track record speaks for itself: over 80% of participants are repeat travelers, partaking in often over 15 separate tours each – of which Marottoli tirelessly works to create a friendly and familiar atmosphere.

Mixing history, and culinary delights

The Greece and Turkey tours each coincide with Easter in Greece (April 3-11) – a monumental cultural event and celebration – and includes both cooking classes and visits to archaeological gems of Athene, Crete and Santorini, hitting many wineries along the way.

The Piedmont and Cinque Terre tours (April 16-24) bring guests to “prestigious” wineries of Barolo and Barbaresco and allow…

Team BeauSoleil from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will be entering their solar home in the  Solar Decathlon from October 9-13 and  October 15-18 in Washington DC.  20 Universities will be participating. (See here to watch videos of all the teams. ) This is the first time any team from the University has entered the contest.  What makes the Ragin’ Cajuns’ home so unique is that the students took their first hand experiences of the ravages of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to help design their  coastal home.

Why the name? It means “Beautiful Sun in French” or “Sunshine” in Cajun French. Watch the video above to see how they married their culture and the environment into this modest 800 highly functional space.

It features:

  • Generates more energy than it consumes.  Totally solar powered.
  • Withstands hurricane-force winds
  • State-of-the-art kitchen for entertaining and cooking.   According to the University, “good conversation and great food are important elements of…
