As Enviroblog readers know, EWG has been pushing for years to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the nation’s chemical “safety” law. What’s reportable, today, is this:

The chemical industry, the EPA and the Obama Administration all now agree that the law needs to be reformed.

And no, I’m not making this up.

To make the most of this unprecedented opportunity to move the reform process forward, EWG is co-hosting an historic stakeholder conference in Washington on October 6th to discuss exactly what how that should be done.

As Jane Houlihan, EWG’s Senior Vice-President for Research, said in response to EPA’s recent support for chemicals policy reform:

The system we have now assumes that chemicals are innocent until proven guilty. The reforms introduced today would flip that.

About the conference: Exploring fundamental changes to U.S. chemicals policy

At the day-long event, organizations representing chemical manufacturers, environmental and public health…

Eco-friendly basics

Many associate a sustainable home with solar panels, expensive floor renovations, various purchases of Energy Star appliances, and other costly investments. But greening your home doesn’t have to be costly and time consuming. Even though pricey investments, like going off the grid, can have great ecological and economics benefits, it’s important to accomplish the basics of going green first. Here are 10 quick and cheap steps you can take to make your home more energy efficient while helping you save money.

1. Insulate and save

According to the Consumer Energy Center, 31% of air leaks occur in floors, walls, and ceilings. Poor insulation can cause significant indoor heat loss. Sealing air leaks in your home can save you 20% or more on your heating and cooling bill. Learn how to seal and locate leaks in your home by reading our Air Sealing and Weatherization article.

2. Got light? Get CFLs

By replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights you…

We all have heard the buzzwords before: green, , reuse-recycled, carbon footprint, etc. The environmental movement is a very trendy topic (just take a look at some Twitter polls whenever you get a chance). But even with all the hype, many are still finding it hard to make the proper adjustments to their lifestyle.

Some people doubt (yeah, tell me about it), while others feel that “green” products and services are just a big scam. Some people may just not like Al Gore. And probably most prominent: going green just costs way too damn  much.

This is precisely where the new eBook “How To Go Green” comes in. The aim of the book is to show the public that, regardless of personal beliefs and the environmental movement as a whole, going green is the smart thing to do.

In the end, according to the book, living an eco-friendly lifestyle will both save the planet and save you money.

Making real changes in small steps

For starters, the new guide explains in…

The Top 20 Things We Throw Away (That We Shouldn’t)
How often do you have to empty the trash cans around your home? If you take a trip outside to the dumpster every couple days, it’s time to examine why your garbage bins fill up so quickly. Green Building07 Oct 2009 09:00 am

Our clients building a Japanese timber home are also building a garage apartment on their property.

The garage apartment, also called a carriage house, will be built first and act as our client’s main residence while the main house is built. The ground floor houses the traditional two-car garage with storage space around the perimeter for tools, sports equipment, and other miscellaneous items.

The carriage house apartment original design placed a sleeping area into one of the two dormers and a main central area containing the living, storage and bathroom.

Because our clients will be living in the garage apartment for 2-3 years until the main house is finished construction, they wanted the design to reflect more living space, including a separate bedroom with a walk-in closet. To accommodate the added living space, the carriage house was widened and the floor plan redesigned.

Carriage houses generally feature an open floor plan and can be designed in any architectural style, making…
