We celebrated the Grand Opening of our new architectural firm office in New London, New Hampshire last week. What a great turnout! We had over 70 business owners, residents, and Chamber of Commerce members here - and for quite a while there wasn’t room to move! Thank you to all of our old friends who came to congratulate us and to all of the new friends who came to introduce yourselves and learn about our architectural services.

Yankee Communications was also on hand for the festivities and grabbed our Principal Architect Jeremy Bonin for an interview which will appear on Kearsarge Valley Magazine in the next couple of weeks (watch for a blog post!).

Our neighbors in Baynham’s Square (Ellie’s Cafe & Deli, Vessels & Jewels, and The Banks Gallery) also held open houses that night and visitors were able to visit all of the Square’s businesses. Hot hors d’ouevres were provided by Ellie’s Cafe and we concluded the evening by sharing a cake decorated for the occasion.

If you didn’t get a…

The science may not yet be decided on the effects of cell phone radiation on human health, but recent research is unsettling enough that Environmental Working Group (and government safety agencies around the world) recommends reducing your exposure where you can.

This blog series breaks down EWG’s recent report on cell phone radiation - so far we’ve talked about the science of cell phone radiation and simple steps to limit your exposure.

By now you may be wondering where the government is in all this - shouldn’t they be making sure that products on the market are safe for everyone? Read on to learn about current US cell phone standards, how they stack up (not well) and what you can do to make them stronger.

How the government regulates cell phone radiation

Mobile phones are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which established rules on how much radiation cell phones can legally emit back in 1996 (did you have a cell phone 13 years ago?). These…

The State of South Carolina has just launched a new certification program for the hospitality industry called the South Carolina Green Hospitality Alliance. The program is aimed mainly at hotels, motels and restaurants; providing a means for establishments to boost awareness by demonstrating what they are doing to help protect and preserve the state’s environment.

The program is a joint effort between the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and South Carolina Hospitality Association.

“Each of us—, business, industry and individuals—must do our part to help protect South Carolina’s environment,” said DHEC Commissioner Earl Hunter. “This program presents a unique opportunity for the hospitality industry to lead by example through the use of smart, sustainable, cost-effective practices that help conserve natural resources, save energy and reduce pollution.”

The South Carolina Green Hospitality Alliance is a free, voluntary program…

Triple Pane windows
Photo from Department of Energy.

I bet you just got used to hearing about double pane, Low-E glass,  Argon filled windows.  You know the ones.  The ones labeled as ENERGY STAR?   Now, there is a new babe in town getting a lot of attention from  the Department of Energy.   The R-5 window has all the right curves and significant energy savings compared to its distant cousin, the ENERGY STAR window.  Yep,  this R-5  is energy efficient beauty with triple panes of  either high solar-gain, Low-E Glass, Argon/Krpton Gas or high solar-gain, Low-E Glass, Argon/Krpton Gas, depending on your area of the country.  According to the DOE,

“Common ENERGY STAR windows only have an R-value of 3. Increasing the R-value from 3 to 5 reduces average heat loss through the windows by 40% and saves consumer money on energy bills.”

But why  are the R-5 windows the darlings of the DOE?

“Windows in the U.S. account for 30% loss of building heating and cooling energy, representing an annual…
