Utilizing outdoor spaces is an important aspect of home design. Whether your site is level, sloping, rocky, or wooded, you can maximize your living area and take advantage of views by considering one or more of these applications and spaces:

Sunrooms and three-season porches

Patios and decks

Terraces and courtyards

Pergolas and Gazebos

Cooking areas and fireplaces

Docks and water access

Walkways and paths
Gardens and landscaping
Outdoor spaces enhance the living areas and interior of the home. Talk to your architect in the beginning stages of your home design to incorporate them into your home plan.

665946582_5c7098d94e_m.jpgLast week we told you about the 232 toxic chemicals we found in human cord blood.

This week we tell you how to reduce your exposures to toxic chemicals to keep them out of your womb. Because at EWG we don’t accept toxic pregnancy as a fait accompli. Far from it.

Instead, we want you to know that pregnant and pregnant-to-be women CAN reduce their exposures to toxic chemicals, thereby reducing their babies’ exposures. Not that we think you should have to do this, mind you, on top of the other billion things you’re doing.

Quite the opposite, actually.

We think Congress should step up and take this off your already full “to do” list. But since the current federal toxics law is too weak to protect you - or your baby, we suggest that you take matters into your own hands:

  1. Don’t smoke
Cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals that have been proven to cause harm, including raising the risk of low birth weight and size, reduced lung capacity and impaired brain function….

Costco has a new inkjet cartridge refill service in many locations. They do this in the Photo center. Not only do you save money over purchasing a new cartridge, you also reduce waste by recycling what you already have.
Refilling a HP 901 XL Black cartridge costs $9.99, buying a new one costs $29.99.

I usually tote my lunch to work in a re-used paper bag, but by the end of the week that bag ends up looking pretty haggard. Thankfully the guys over at Neogreene heeded my call and sent me one of their new eco-friendly insulated lunch tote along with a waterbottle cozy.
Many of you may remember [...]

A few days ago, I wrote an op-ed on the recent “Climategate” email scandal that not only lashed out at the stubborn skeptics and deniers, but also the scientific institutions purported to have committed the said “scandal”.

Here is a quick refresh of some of the things I wrote:

“The Climate Research Unit (CRU) scientists whose emails were “leaked” online made a huge mistake: being stupid. Regardless of the intent, no one, on either side of the aisle, will take them on their word again. The global warming feud is bitter and cold (that pun was slightly intended), and the actions of said scientists are entirely unacceptable. Immense pressure from an entire politically-driven industry intent on crushing their every effort is no excuse for bending the facts, or hiding them completely.

“Although I am typically the antagonist against any and all climate change deniers and/or skeptics – as they are generally either a mislead or misleading bunch devoted to greed and political gain –…
