We’ve heard the warnings.  We’ve seen the signs.  We know it’s coming unless we change our wasteful lifestyles.  But changing is difficult, especially where businesses and transportation systems are concerned.

And when it comes down to it, there just isn’t very much you can do about it, right?  After all, you can’t make the businesses stop being greedy, and you can’t make the factories that create harmful toxins go out of business. Really, what can you do?

The truth is that the only person you are in control of and the only person you can make do something about it is yourself.  And change will never come until individuals like YOU realize that fact.

So let’s start there.  What CAN you do about it?

The year 2006 was ranked the hottest year in all of recorded history for the United States of America.  And there is an obvious relationship between the increasing length in the fire seasons and the increased temperatures and earlier snowmelts over the…

By Amy Rosenthal, EWG Outreach Manager

My favorite farmer’s market just closed for the winter, forcing me back to the grocery store to shop for produce. Since I can’t ask the guys at Safeway about their spraying policies, like I can when I get to talk right to the farmer, I’ll be pulling out my Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides to help make decisions in the produce aisle.

As much as I’d like to buy all organic, it just isn’t always realistic, given the cost and availability of organic fruits & veggies. EWG’s Shopper’s Guide ranks 47 types of produce based on the amount of pesticide residues found on them, which is a huge help to decide when buying organic is most worthwhile for my health, and when buying conventional can be OK.

The list has been around since 1995 (updated when new data becomes available), but now for the first time you can see and hear how it works (ahhh, technology). Here I am, straight from EWG HQ in Washington, DC, giving the lowdown on the 2009 Shopper’s…

Solar BackPacks are an eco friendly  way to recharge  those power hungry gadgets like cell phones, portable game systems, or radios.  Good ones cost about $200 and include battery packs that store solar power.  Solar panels are tough, light weight, waterproof, and generate up to 4 watts of power.  A nice gift idea for that [...]

With the COP15 Conference well underway this week, many are turning their attention to global tourism and its role in climate change, as well as its impact on developing nations.

Do changes in travel practices that benefit the environment negatively affect the economies of top, non-industrialized destinations?

The connection between climate change and international tourism presents a host of challenges, with a number of varying perspectives that identify how the role of tourism affects both the physical and political sides of the international climate debate.

Like all the other industries, international tourism has the responsibility to substantially reduce its greenhouse gas emissions; through transportation, accommodation and various activities in the destinations, the tourism sector causes about five percent of global carbon emissions.

However, to be fair to the entire world, the costs and structural changes associated with these emission reductions must not be at the expense…
