One of our architectural design clients is building an ocean view home in Middletown RI, overlooking Third Beach, Sachuest Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.

The 2400 SF ocean view home is in the preliminary design phase. With the garage in the basement, this plan makes efficient use of space.

The first floor features an open floor plan, with a lower level conservatory to capture views of the ocean in four seasons. The dining area is open to the kitchen and living room. Exterior decks are designed to maximize outdoor living space and to enjoy the beauty of the coastal architecture and surroundings.

Two bedrooms and two baths are located on the second floor. Multiple windows take advantage of gorgeous ocean views and allow for ventilation to capture the crisp salty breeze.

The exterior stone, window grille pattern, conservatory, and covered porch are all consistent with New England coastal architecture.

Now that that you’ve taken our cosmetics safety quiz (you have, right?), you’re ready to hear about THE DATA GAP. It’s like this:

We think consumers deserve to know that the products and ingredients they use every day have been tested for safety.

Unfortunately, a lack of industry regulation has left customers in the dark about the safety of many of their personal care products.

mind the gap.jpgConsider this: out of the 10,500 (!) unique ingredients found in our cosmetics, about 20 percent have been tested or analyzed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, the FDA has no authority or systematic process to review most cosmetic ingredients. This “data gap,” as we call it, is a serious concern for consumers. Given that the average adult uses about 126 different chemicals a day in personal care products alone, it’s important to recognize that the missing information and unknown implications of these ingredients mean potential health risks…

It is early January and it looks a possible drought year for the San Francisco Bay area again.  Thoughts turn to capturing any rain we get to reduce our need for water and commensurately our water bill. Amazon even sells Rain Water Barrels.
You can get started with an easy barrel or bucket under areas where [...]

Long known as a city of wretched excess, the city of Las Vegas has recently been making strides toward sustainability with the opening of the new CityCenter. Now, another effort to forward green initiatives is underway, titled “One Good World”, beginning with the 2010 Winter Las Vegas Market in February.

Last September, 80% of Las Vegas Market designers and retailers said they believe sustainable home furnishings are very to moderately important to their business.

One Good World aims to highlight the many eco-friendly practices at World Market Center’s trade complex while equipping retailers with the insights, information and strategies needed to respond to the rising consumer demand for sustainable furnishings—and reduce one’s own carbon footprint in the process.

“The green economy is not coming fast—it is already here,” said Robert Maricich, World Market Center Las Vegas president and CEO. “Being ‘green’ is more than a principle and more than a trend; it is a…

Not Flushing the Toilet to save Water

Did you ever think you were green before the term, being green was coined?  Were some of your actions just plain green before everyone started counting them as part of the old reduce your carbon footprint jargon?  Maybe you actually don’t realize some of your habits are pretty green but never stopped to think about it.  Read on to see how you might be greener than you think.

Flushing the Toilet:

How many of you flush the toliet after every bowel movement?   Come on.  Let’s be honest.  If you are like my kids, they flush about 80 percent of the time after #2 and maybe 50% after #1.   (That is when it makes it into the bowl And I haven’t sat in it.  I know the “ick factor.”)

I honestly forget sometimes to flush after #1 especially in an upstairs bathroom since I am rushing from one chore to another.

Given the fact that toilets waste a lot of water each year, not flushing after number #1 is not the worse crime in the world.  (But, cleaning urine stains in bowls are not…
