Since 1863, the colors of the University of Massachusetts have been Maroon and White. And if you know Amherst, Massachusetts, USA, the hometown of that school, you know of the dazzling changes in color visible in the autumn. So, combining that color-changing capacity with world-class research has added a new color to the University’s color scheme.
You can probably guess that color. Yep. It’s green.
“At UMass Amherst,” says Chancellor Robert Holub, “We build green, we research green and we help the entire country envision a green future. The campus has worked at this tirelessly for years, and now our expertise and leadership position are being recognized.” This comes from a recent article at the University of Massachusetts’ website, linked here.
There are quite a few efforts going on at the University which should pique the interest of our PM readers, but there are two that we’ll focus on – here in this posting and in a follow up interview to appear on EarthPM…

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has replaced the incandescent bulbs in a number their stop lights with energy efficient LEDs, saving approximately $750,000 per year. Some Wisconsin municipalities have as well. Beside being more energy efficient, the LEDs last many times longer than the incandescent bulbs.
But wait, there is a slight problem. The incandescent light bulbs generated enough heat to melt the snow off if the lenses, the energy saving LEDs do not. The project is now in the mitigation mode to try to find a solution for the problem that, in certain conditions, makes it impossible to tell whether the light is red, yellow, or green. While not really a “green” project management issue, it is an unintended consequence, or in this case an apparently unidentified risk. When attempting a green project, the project manager needs to be aware of those unintended consequences. The more education a project manager has in project greenality, the more they…

In the wake of one of the worst natural disasters in the Western Hemisphere, our thoughts and prayers are with the good people of Haiti. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives and to those who are grieving their loss.
The scope of this event is perhaps too large to grasp. Many are trying to make sense of the loss and destruction, wondering whether any hope remains.
The tragic loss of life and extensive damage caused by the earthquake that hit Haiti has left impoverished children, families and communities to suffer, while proper support is entirely out of their hands. It is up to us to help.
So close to home

I’ve been fascinated by green living walls and vertical gardens, but they have always seemed a bit complicated or labor intensive- at least for a small rented apartment. A company called Woolly Pockets has solved that issue, in some very interesting ways- the most bizarre is a mobile version.
Of course you can imagine what a [...]
My kids love clementines (okay devour clementines.) So what is the harm with this? Their packaging. They come in a wood crate with a plastic net. I HATE the packaging. I can’t recycle the crate but have been giving them away to be reused. People sure love them.
My cousin uses them to store her arts and craft materials. Others use it as an organization unit. No one seems to refuse me when I ask them if they want the crate. In fact, people look at me funny when I give them away. As if to say, why are you giving this to me. Keep it. I bet you can use it.
Over time, I started to wonder why was I giving them away? I have my dense moments. I admit it.
Since I am stuck inside with no gardening chores (*sniff, sniff*), I have turned my creativity towards cleaning up my sorry neglected house. I noticed that my bathroom drawers are a disaster! Everything is tossed around in the drawer. What a mess.
I looked at my clementine crates and they looked at me with…
