yogurtThis posting was born with the underside of a Stonyfield Yogurt foil cover.  But if you bear with me and read the posting, it will fling you far into the future, plant you pleasingly in the past, exit you to Egypt, and forward you to the fetching forest.

I was rinsing it off to recycle it, and I noticed that it had some statistics on trees, paper, and mail.  It also had a link to a site, 41pounds.org, which I’ll get to later.

The premise of the yogurt cover was that we are being buried under junk mail (at least in the US, but I believe it’s a somewhat global problem – would like to hear from our worldwide readers about that).  That triggered a memory of a fantastic book I read many years ago called “Motel of the Mysteries” by David Macaulay.  Below is a blurb from the publisher:

mysteryIt is the year 4022; all of the ancient country of Usa has been buried under many feet of detritus from a catastrophe that occurred back in 1985. Imagine, then, the excitement that Howard Carson, an…

200px-Silent_Spring_Book-of-the-Month-Club_edition.JPGKnown, of course, for her movement-launching 1962 book, Silent Spring, Rachel Carson understood the important relationship between nature and chemicals. She raised her voice to inform others and protect the environment long before it was popular.

Carson’s biographer, Linda Lear, describes her courageous role questioning the norms of her day:

Disturbed by the profligate use of synthetic chemical pesticides after World War II, Carson reluctantly changed her focus in order to warn the public about the long term effects of misusing pesticides. In Silent Spring (1962) she challenged the practices of agricultural scientists and the government, and called for a change in the way humankind viewed the natural world.

Carson was attacked by the chemical industry and some in government as an alarmist, but courageously spoke out to remind us that we are a vulnerable part of the natural world subject to the same damage as the rest of the ecosystem. Testifying before Congress in 1963,…

Currently one of the world’s largest tiger populations, the Bengal Tiger is quickly losing its habitat along the coast of Bangladesh in an area known as the Sundarbans, according to a new World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-led study published in the journal Climatic Change.

According to the study, an expected sea level rise of 11 inches above 2000 levels may cause the remaining tiger habitat in the Sundarbans to decline by 96 percent, pushing the total population to fewer than 20 breeding tigers – a far cry from the (albeit dismal) 3,200 remaining in the wild.

The threats facing these Bengal tigers and other iconic species around the world underscore the need for urgent international action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unless immediate action is taken, the Sundarbans, its wildlife and the natural resources that sustain millions of people will simply disappear within 50 to 90 years.

“If we don’t take steps to address the impacts of climate change on the Sundarbans, the only way…

Another Quicken Product in my mailbox

Have you been a recipient of an Intuit’s try me disk?  I have receive quite a few especially around tax season,  but I never realized so many other people had too. How did I know? When I was cleaning out my  My GreenDisk box which was spilling over with computer junk, I noticed quite a few Intuit Disks in the pile.  Some of them were probably mine.

In fact, I will be adding to the pile with the above pictured  Quicken Disk.  Coincidentally,   I received  this disk in the mail today urging me to activate the new 2010 disk since my 2007 disk will be expiring soon.  Funny thing is I use Quicken’s 2009 software. So, the 2007 expiration warning does not apply to me.   All Intuit had to do was check their records or cross check against my address since my husband and I use different name to see which version I owned.

I know Intuit is trying to drum up business for itself, but why do they need to send out so many CDs that get thrown in the trash?

My wish list for Intuit is…
