Accor North America (ANA), a division of Accor Hospitality, has announced that for 2010 it will pilot the Green Key Eco-Rating Program (Green Key) within its 20 properties located in the United States.

Green Key, one of the first and most popular programs of its kind, inspects, ranks and certifies hotels and resorts based on their commitment to sustainable “green” practices.

“Accor is widely recognized within the global hospitality industry as being a leader in sustainability initiatives,” said Tony Pollard, managing director of Green Key Global. “We are confident that Green Key will become an important part of Accor North America’s efforts to protect and preserve the environment.”

The ANA/Green Key pilot will include representatives from the Motel 6, Sofitel and Studio 6 brands; those properties selected for the pilot will participate in the entire Green Key certification process, including:

A new Premier Inn, set to open in Fall 2010, will be the second “green” property for Whitebread, the UK’s leading dining and hospitality group. The property will feature green construction, amenities and a “low-carbon eatery”.

Situated in West Sussex, the upcoming 60-room Burgess Hill Premier Inn represents the latest evolution in environmentally-friendly budget hotels. It will adopt the best-performing green technologies trialed in Whitbreas’s pilot green property to deliver 70 percent carbon and 60 percent water savings.

Adjacent to the hotel, Whitbread will develop its first low-carbon restaurant—a 220-cover Beefeater open grill restaurant.

Whitbread’s pilot green hotel – in Tamworth, Staffordshire – debuted as the country’s first green budget hotel in December 2008.

Going “Good Together”

Launched in December 2009, Whitbread’s corporate sustainability program “Good Together” pledges to reduce carbon emissions by 26 percent by 2020. To meet these standards, the new…

The Dominican Republic (DR) Ministry of Tourism has reported that, despite last week’s quake that crippled its neighbor of Haiti, they are receiving tourists as usual.

According to the Ministry, all of its cities, tourism, and resort areas are conducting normal business operations, while the DR government, consulates, and embassies are working diligently with the international community on Haiti earthquake relief.

The Dominican Republic is, of course, a popular Caribbean tourism spot for visitors from across the globe, with a large percent originating from the U.S. This is a stark contrast from the impoverished pre-quake economy of Haiti.

All of the major tourist areas, hotels, resorts, airports, and seaports are open and receiving visitors. The DR experienced no damage from the quake or its aftershocks. Major tourism regions Punta Cana and La Romana on the east coast, as well as Samana and Puerto Plata along the north coast are still welcoming winter season tourists from all over…

After spending the past week at the PPAI Expo in Las Vegas (which is the largest new product tradeshow in the promotional industry) I'm happy to report that more and more of our suppliers are offering items made from sustainable and recycled materials. Even better news - the price difference is shrinking between "green" and traditional promotional products. Many of the new eco-friendly items are now just slightly higher in price than their traditional counterparts, which really needed to happen for earth friendly promos to become mainstream.

Today I want to tell you about a new eco-friendly version of an old swag favorite - the insulated can cooler (often called a can "koozie").Eco-Coolie These are an old-school swag item with a new "green" twist - they are now available made of neoprene material that contains at least 85% post-consumer recycled content!

Eco Coolie: This is SUCH a new item that it's not even available until February 1st, but I wanted to be the very first to tell you about…
