The first day of spring might be seven weeks away, but if you want to support local farmers and enjoy a weekly share of their produce during the warmer seasons, you should sign up now for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. As the Washington Post’s Leigh Lambert notes in "Where to Sign Up for a CSA," these programs can be pick-up or delivery and work like so: You pay an annual or

The design is underway for a lakefront home for our clients, a newlywed couple building on their property overlooking Chase Pond in Wilmot, NH. The home is a traditional New England style home designed at approximately 2500 square feet.

Goals for this custom home are energy efficiency, low maintenance, and flexibility in the design, as our clients are planning to live in it well into their retirement years. The home has several special features: an open floor plan, three bedrooms, each with private baths; a tower, and a large media room.

Having an open kitchen, dining area, and great room are a priority for this couple. Holidays are filled with visiting friends and extended family.

The second floor Master suite will be the couple’s private retreat. Years down the road they will be able to move to the first floor suite.

Check out our other house plans in the works on our website!

On January 22, in a substantial shift in policy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it has “some concern” about the health effects of bishphenol A (BPA), particularly on infants and children. While not currently advocating regulation, the FDA is proposing steps that could lead to restrictions.

“We need to know more,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg during a press conference. But “as a precaution,” the FDA has issued recommendations for reducing exposure.

This contrasts markedly with the FDA’s 2008 assessment that declared of BPA use safe in consumer products, including for infants and children. It also aligns FDA’s views with those of the National Toxicology Program and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Bisphenol A is the chemical building block of polycarbonate plastics….

Chicken is in the news again. Tyson settles consumer class-action suit over Chicken Labeling. The case started in January 2008 when competitors Perdue Farms and Sanderson Farms sued them alleging that Tyson’s “raised-without-antibiotics” labeling constituted false advertising. Tyson used a chicken feed additive called ionophore that the USDA considers an antibiotic, but had not been [...]

Green remodeling and building practices don’t stop with energy efficiency - there are many different ways to go green from the basement to the roof of your home.

A wide variety of green flooring choices now exist - no more high pile, dirt collecting, VoC emitting carpeting!   One great green choice that is becoming trendy is cork flooring.  Cork can be harvested every nine years from the same tree, which makes it a renewable resource.  It is a good choice for a kitchen area, or anywhere you plan on spending a lot of time on your feet because it is cushy and comfortable.   You can now get cork in a wide variety of colors - and also in tile form so you can create custom patterns and designs.

Another idea for green flooring also simplifies the construction process - just refinish the concrete slab into a nicely colored and textured surface.  This also helps with energy efficiency as concrete absorbs heat during the day, and releases it during the night.

Chinet compostable plates

How many people do you know take pictures with their blackberry of paper plates in BJs?  Probably just me but I had good reason to be excited.  Here in front of my lovely doe green eyes was a package of 165 Chinet Classic White paper plates that I could compost in my magical composter!

Some of you are murmuring.  “Um, Anna, I don’t get it.  I know you love gardening but I just don’t see the connection.”  Okay, let me explain.  Up until that astonishing moment at BJs, my only hope for a greener large party was using biodegradable plates and silverware.  So, what is wrong with that?

A lot.  Biodegradable plates can only be composted in a commercial facility, not my backyard composter as grand as it is.  How many of you have commercial facilities available in your areas? The closest one that I have is in the middle of the state. I don’t know whether I can just take a 45 minute drive down to their facility and hand them a bag of my biodegradable plates and cups, and say  “Go…
