At EWG, we dish out a lot of (very useful, practical, science-based!) advice on how to live with fewer toxics, so it comes naturally to present this week’s Carnival posts as suggestions on different ways to live green - from a host of green bloggers ’round the globe.

You can choose from one of these 14 green living ideas today (more, of course, if you’re feeling gung-ho):

1. Dave suggests: Be polite when sharing your environmental zeal. No fair being scary.
An aggressive note from a neighbor having to do with the weekly trash, a dead bear, and getting sent back to the east coast. [Enviroblog: Let's hear it for the neighbors!]

2. Jess suggests: Don’t drag them kicking and screaming to greenness.
Studies indicate that one of the most effective ways to change…

Voluntourism may be just what the The Kingdom of Jordan needs to tap it wealth of cultural assets, say tourism experts.

According to David Clemmons, an expert on the niche market and editor of Voluntourist, the concept of volunteer travel caters to those who would like to leave a lasting impact on the community they visit.

“It wasn’t until voluntourism that we as travellers could express our gratitude,” Clemmons told The Jordan Times. “There is a need not only to take something back home, but to leave something behind, to leave a piece of the traveler. This is where we see this market heading.”

Roots in caring

The concept of voluntourism originated over a decade ago, with Western backpackers staying with families in South America and looking for ways to help the local community. Since then, the market has grown, with tourists engaging in volunteer activities on all five continents, ranging from building local schools to aiding in harvests.

According to a 2009 forecast poll…

Only two weeks have passed since the massive 7.0 earthquake that leveled Haiti, during which time a massive humanitarian operation has hit the ground running to deliver aid to those who desperately need it.

The most urgent priorities remain water, health care, shelter and food.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), a team of senior experts on the ground since January 13th continue to provide technical assistance and support on environmental matters to the Humanitarian Country Team and to the local government, including through emergency environmental assessments of affected sites and active participation in the humanitarian cluster system.

Measuring the issues

Together, the group has identified a number of major environmental issues for the short and medium term, including:

Medical waste

Emergency response operations are currently generating a very significant amount of medical waste, which is piling up in hospitals and medical treatment centers. No systems…

Holiday Greeting Cards bound for Recycling

After all the holiday presents have been exchanged, the tree taken down, and the ornaments put away, how many of you still have up your holiday cards laying around?  I tend to keep mine up a little longer because I love the festive colors that adorn my mantel.

Usually, I take off the pictures that my friends give me of their kids and store them away in my albums and toss the rest into the recycling bind.  Diane at the Big Green Purse mentioned that she uses her old holiday cards for gift tags.  I thought what a brilliant idea.

Each year, I must give out 50 plus boxes of pumpkin butter puree to all my kids teachers with my minimalistic wrapping solution inspired by Beth of Fake Plastic Fish.  However, I was cutting up paper apples that I had from another project to make little tags for the gifts.  To add to my already uber-green-holiday regime, I thought how cool would that be to add different color holiday messages to my gifts? It is great having an eclectic mix of green…
