phpThumb.jpgWith green being the new black, there are more than a few environmental documentaries to choose from when popping that (not-in-the-microwave) popcorn.

To help you navigate the choices, EWG’s very own Don Carr, press secretary and hard-hitting ag policy blogger, offers guidance on which to see. He screened them himself at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to boil it down for us on Grist. On my list are the ones Don highlights as “well-crafted, compelling films that address crucial environmental themes not yet in the public consciousness.” Trailers included.

So find the film(s) for you and turn on the stove to start popping the corn the old-fashioned way.

About that movie popcorn…
If you’re ready to learn more and reduce your exposure to the perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) that line popcorn and other fast-food wrapper (among other things), get EWG’s Guide to PFCs.

Food Inc. was a sobering but enlightening movie.  It covers the commercialization of the food industry. There are many costs when putting value and convenience over nutrition and environmental impact.
Shown were slaughterhouses and factory farms where chickens grow too fast to walk properly. Cows eat feed pumped with toxic chemicals.  After watching this you want [...]

Lonely Planet, a 37 year old leading publisher of travel guidebooks, has just officially published its 100 millionth guidebook (Australia). To celebrate, the popular go-to for globetrotters is inviting travelers to share photographs of their favorite travel experiences online.

Beginning on January 29th, travelers can upload their favorite travel images to lonelyplanet.com/win for the chance to win a round-the-world trip for two or one of 200 Nokia handsets.

According to Lonely Planet co-founder, Tony Wheeler, shared travel experiences are at the heart of everything Lonely Planet does.

“And this is why we decided to reach out to our travel community with a competition to build the world’s largest online mosaic of travel images to support us having published 100 million guidebooks,” said Wheeler. “Pictures are a wonderful way to tell a story. They can celebrate memories of travel and capture the essence of our experiences. Over the years, Maureen and I have taken thousands of…

In a recent appeal to Haiti business leaders, Former President Bill Clinton has earmarked tourism as a key investment opportunity in the country’s post-quake recovery effort.

The politician-turned-philanthropist believes that tourism investment in the region should be regarded as a business opportunity, rather than aid.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Clinton noted that the catastrophe could turn out to be an opportunity for the nation to emerge from generations of grinding poverty.

Clinton, who has held a long-time interest in Haiti, is seeking private investment as an effort to rebuild the devastated nation. He has also been enlisted by Ban Ki-Moon, the UN secretary general to support a cash-for-work program to revive Haiti’s shattered economy.

As many as 200,000 people have been killed by the earthquake while an estimated 1.5 million people have also been left homeless. As each day brings new both lasting heartbreak as well as new opportunity, the Haitian…

Our newest client contacted us to design an addition for his vacation log home located on the Connecticut River, Vermont.

The new addition increases the floor plan by 850 square feet, adding an entry, a great room, bedroom, and full bath. An existing bedroom in the log home will be remodeled to become the access hallway to the new wing. A masonry heater will be added to provide comfortable, even heat throughout the addition and into the home.

The sliding barn doors will add security to the home when the owners are away.

Turkey Vultures

Until I moved into my house on the hill, I never saw a turkey vulture before. Or at least I did not pay attention. They love to perch on top of my chimneys. Well, lately they have come to love my house. Since I am on a mountain like hill, my roof is a great vantage point to see where the food is.  The dead food.

Turkey vultures are scavengers. They look for dead animals. They are nature’s incinerators.   I got to witness turkey vultures in action when we had a dead deer which we had to drag to the curb. (Yes, it was the grossest experience with the deer’s you know what hanging out of its side.)

Dead Baby Deer

My oldest son and husband picked it up and put it in a cart.  Animal control in my area required you to bring it to the curb if you want to remove it from your property.  How did the deer die?  It looks like she broke her leg.  But how, we have no idea.  The deer was laying in the middle of my front yard. Kind of odd.

I should have filmed my husband and son trying  to pick the…
