greenin3 Duke University, based in Durham, NC, in the United States, is known to many for its basketball team, but it’s also a respected academic institution with 13,000 students and a significant research program.  One aspect of their research is led by the dean of Duke’s Nicholas School of the Enviornment, Bill Chameides.  Bill has his own excellent blog – probably worth bookmarking if you’re interested in the science of the environment.

In any case, although this is all about science and carbon and PCBs and equations at an academic level, there’s more to this than would be enjoyed only by the cast of The Big Bang Theory TVshow.  There’s also some fun to be had.  And it appears that Dean Chameides is a fun-loving guy.  That’s apparent in the video contest they’ve established.  EarthPM plans to produce an entry and we encourage as many project managers out there to take the challenge as well.  Think of it as a little project.

Yeah, yeah, blah blah, blah, so get to the $500… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

2391082779_c722be9b72.jpgEnviroblog readers all know that “fragrance” is a term that the cosmetics, cleaning and candle industries use on ingredient lists that discloses only that there are unnamed chemicals in the product.

Which is not so helpful for avid label-readers (like me) who want and deserve full information when choosing products. Unless you use it as a red flag of what not to buy, that is. Then - and only then - is it helpful.

It’s pretty big news that, after years of intentional mystery, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) decided to publish an alphabetical list of ingredients that its members reportedly use to make consumer products.

Why’d they do it?

Simple: consumers want more transparency (yes, you’re being heard!). And while this isn’t exactly the kind of transparency we had in mind, or that helps consumers make informed decisions about their health, it’s a step. (And it’s a decent PR move for IFRA, right?)

A long list with some…

Home designers and builders speaking at the recent International Builders Show in Las Vegas say that buyers are seeking cost-effective features and rejecting things that don’t have lasting value.

“It’s all about family togetherness – casual living, entertaining and flexible spaces,” says Carol Lavender, president of the Lavender Design Group in San Antonio.

Paul Cardis, CEO of Avid Ratings, which conducts an annual survey of buyer preferences, identified these must-haves in new homes:

1. Large kitchens with islands
2. Energy efficiency, including energy-efficient appliances, super insulation, and high-efficiency windows.
3. Home offices
4. Main-floor master suite
5. Outdoor living space
6. Ceiling fans
7. Soaking tub in the master suite and/or an oversize shower with a seating area
8. Stone and brick exteriors rather than stucco or vinyl
9. Community walking paths and playgrounds
10. Two-car garages, but three-car garages are even more desirable

Planning a travel excursion soon? Well, you may want to lock in those prices. A new travel forecast by the growing Bing Travel engine (Microsoft) suggests that airfare has already increased by 95 since 2009’s Spring Break prices.

The good news is: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Balancing out the price jump is the report that, while airfares are going up, hotel rates are going down – by 15% since last year at the same time. This little tidbit helps to balance out the total trip cost for travelers.

The 2010 Spring Break Forecast, issued by the “Fareologists” at Bing Travel, showed that this year airfare for both international and domestic spring break travel, generally defined as travel between Feb. 28 and March 31, averages $349, up 9 percent from 2009. In addition, the average ticket for the most popular spring break travel itinerary with a Saturday departure and Sunday return is $418, up $57 or 16 percent from last year.

Lower hotel rates bring down…

organic hair color
Do you need to put on a mask before coloring your hair?

I have been turning gray since my early twenties. It must be hereditary since my Grandfather was all gray at an early age. When I had just few gray strands, I would literally “wash that gray away” with the product of the same name. It would cover the gray for about a week. As the years progressed, I became grayer and grayer. As I approached by late twenties, one of my clients remarked that my gray hair aged me. That was it for me.

The next week I made my first appointment to rid my dark brown hair of those ugly gray stands in my hair. This decision started a twenty year love/hate relationship with hair color. I yearned to stop coloring, but my gray hair was wiry and an unattractive. At this point in my life, I am almost hundred percent gray. When it is time to color, I looked like a skunk with a silver band running down the middle of my hair line.

Have I been slowly Killing Myself?

The amount of chemicals…
